Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act — a national piece of legislation written and inspired by Mainers. Clean water is something we don’t take for granted in Maine, especially given our history and the ongoing lead and PFAS crisis. As we celebrate the , we must continue the fight to ensure every Mainer has access to safe, clean drinking water in their homes and schools. That is how we honor the legacy of the Clean Water Act and do right by Maine people.

While every session has its highs and lows (and plenty in between), this one really was memorable.

I’m proud of the work we did and am grateful to every single Mainer who played a part in getting these bills passed: in public hearings, in the emails and Facebook messages you sent me, and in the advocacy you did in your communities. Your voice makes a difference in getting these bills past the finish line, so thank you.

While there’s plenty more left to do in the months and years to come, we thought we’d share some of the highlights of this past year in Augusta. Hope you enjoy.

I've heard from so many older Mainers about the challenges they face living on a fixed income amid rising costs. It's why I'm proud of our work this session to deliver much-needed tax relief to retired Mainers. Check out this video from my friend and colleague Senator Rafferty who breaks down how this change will help folks afford to remain active members of our community.

The health care and prescription drug provisions in the — which was signed into law this week — mark huge wins for working families and older Mainers:

✅ For decades, folks across our state have asked to allow Medicare to negotiate the prices of lifesaving prescription medications with pharmaceutical companies. This commonsense proposal is now law.
✅ There will finally be a cap on out-of-pocket prescription drug spending for those on Medicare.
✅ And finally, Americans with health insurance through the ACA will see lower premiums.

Here in Maine, we’ve led the charge to lower prescription drug prices and improve access to health care. We know that comprehensive, affordable medical care is essential to our ability to lead happy and healthy lives. This week’s slate of reforms at the federal level certainly won’t solve everything, but they are a huge step in the right direction.

Know that at the state level, we don’t plan to let up anytime soon.
