The International Southern Christian Leadership (SCL) Foundation, Inc. The Foundation is a nonprofit 501c3 tax-exempt organization. Established by Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier, the SCL Foundation was instrumental in financing protest activities led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the 1960’s. Under Belafonte and Poitier’s leadership, the organization raised money to pay for the bail of
arrested student protestors and provided travel accommodations to activists and freedom fighters. During this time, it was also one the few charities created with the sole purpose of advancing African American causes
SCL Foundation, Inc. works in conjunction with Partners and Affiliates that affect the lives of all Americans: North, South, East and West. Its sphere of influence and interests has become international in scope because the human rights movement transcends national boundaries. SCL Foundation’s philosophy is “QUANTUM RESPONSIBILITY.” Which means, individuals are educated, inspired and empowered to understand the true definition of influence to understand their personal power, and to muster the courage to apply said power to the pursuit of civil and human rights–as in the past–for better futures.
