Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.
The 2024 International Day of the Girl theme is ‘Girls’ vision for the future’.
This year’s theme conveys both the need for urgent action and persistent hope, driven by the power of girls’ voices and vision for the future.
Today’s generation of girls is disproportionately affected by global crises of climate, conflict, poverty and pushback on hard won gains for human rights and gender equality. Too many girls are still denied their rights, restricting their choices and limiting their futures.

Today is the International Day of the Girl Child! It is an important day for people around the world to join in recognizing the rights of girls and the unique challenges they face.
At Luke's Place, we both recognize and champion the rights of girls through our work to support women navigate the family court system after leaving abuse. This includes our services for women, training and resources, research activities and advocacy initiatives.

Indigenous Women and Girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada.

“Sisters in Spirit began in 2005 as an education and policy initiative led by Indigenous women. Its goal was to document and raise awareness about the high rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in Canada-known today as the MMIWG2S+ crisis. Now, October 4th serves as a day to honour and remember the lives lost to the crisis through vigils and other awareness initiatives.”

Through collective action and community support, we continue to challenge systems of oppression and promote justice, equality, and safe spaces for all. We encourage you to do the same. Together, we can create a world where violence has no place.
