As exciting as it feels to think you may be in early labor and nearing the moment when you can meet your baby, that is when it's important to rest!
My biggest advice as a birth worker is to rest, nourish yourself with nutritious foods, and drink lots of water and electrolytes. I normally text my doula families throughout their early labor journey until they feel they are ready for me to come visit and check things out.
One questions I am asked often as a birth doula for my hospital birth families is "Can you help us know when it is time to head to the hospital?"
Absolutely! I am here for you. I can come by and hangout with you for a little while to see what is going on, help time contractions, and mentally prep for what is ahead. I may advise that it would be a good time to go lay down and get some rest, I may come over and tell you its time to get bags in the car! It just depends on your unique birth journey's stage 💛
not all postpartum help is created equal!

i am beyond pleased to finally have this certification under my belt! Birth Arts International is an excellent organization & they made this process so enjoyable & fulfilling! here’s to many years of exercising these skills!
a wonderful website recommendation for all the parents so very Tired of fielding this question. you’re welcome. 😘
when we're preparing for birth, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the amount of information that's available. & in that flood of info, it's also easy to be overwhelmed by a specific type of thought: that, somehow, there are ways of giving birth, and places we give birth, that are somehow intrinsically better than others.
and while there's a time & place for discussions about risks & benefits, and there's always space to explore personal desires & wishes about birth, i just want to remind you: the choices we make are morally neutral.
birth place & setting? morally neutral. yes, even that one.
procedures we consent to? morally neutral. yep, that one too.
the choices you make for you, your family, and your birth are not intrinsically moral or immoral. they don't correlate to your worth, or your value. so learn what you can, be prepared to make decisions with confidence & support! you've got this!
{“morally neutral” is a lovely phrase that has entered my lexicon thanks to the equally lovely k.c. of on tiktok. give her a follow!}
"Nothing is particularly easy in birth. It takes courage and trust. But be gutsy."
Some of you may be wondering why I use the term 'birthing people" instead of "women."
Well, it's pretty simple: not everyone who gives birth is a women. Not trying to exclude women by any means. Just trying to include everyone else.
And when I say "Mamas," I mean EVERYONE who does the work of mothering, regardless of gender.

Black birthworkers & midwives are essential, especially in an area where rates of infant & parental mortality are some of the worst in the nation—most especially among birthing parents of color. help my friend reach her goal & pursue her midwife dreams! 🥰😘

gentle hands : meet the doula
Hi! My name is Kyla Bowles, birth nerd, mama to two, and certifying doula! My love of birth began as the oldest in a family of ten kids, watching my own mother give birth in our living room. When I got pregnant myself, I knew I wanted my birth experience to be everything I’d seen with my mom: gentle, powerful, where my needs & wishes were respected. Thankfully, that’s exactly what I got! Now, I spend a lot of my time working to make that dream come true for other birthing parents, too!
I am currently training as a childbirth doula through Birth Arts International, one of the largest certifying organizations in the country. I would love the chance to be part of your journey! Feel free to message, email, or call, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
