The Milk and Skittles experiment is a colorful and fascinating demonstration of how food coloring and milk interact. It’s a great way to explore concepts like surface tension and the behavior of liquids. Here’s how you can perform this fun and educational experiment:

Milk and Skittles Experiment
Materials Needed:

-A plate
-Skittles candy
-Milk (whole milk works best, but 2% can also be used)
-Dish soap
-Cotton swabs or a dropper

Instructions:

Arrange the Skittles: Place Skittles around the edge of the plate in a circular pattern. You can also experiment with different arrangements, like random placement or forming shapes.

Pour the Milk: Gently pour milk into the plate, covering the Skittles. The milk should be enough to cover the candies but not so much that it spills over.

Add Dish Soap: Dip a cotton swab or dropper into dish soap and then gently touch it to the center of the plate, where there’s no Skittles. Observe what happens.

What’s Happening?

Surface Tension: The milk’s surface tension keeps the color from spreading initially. When you add the dish soap, it breaks the surface tension of the milk, causing the color from the Skittles to move and spread.

Soap and Fat Interaction: Milk contains fat, and dish soap interacts with both fat and water. The soap molecules disrupt the fat in the milk, causing the colors to swirl and move around in beautiful patterns.
