Well, something like that could happen to certain Cisco devices if the bad guys exploit these weak spots—they could potentially take the wheel of your network devices!

One particular issue is with the Cisco Firepower Management Center. It's kind of like if someone could whisper secret commands to your security system to let them in because they know the secret handshake (in this case, the "handshake" is a special HTTP request).

But, here’s the kicker: they need to be sort of "inside" already (meaning, they need valid login creds) to do their dirty work.

Cisco isn't keeping us in the dark, though. They've already patched things up and released updates to keep the digital padlocks tight.

🚨 Cybersecurity Update: HTTP/2 'Rapid Reset' DDoS Attack 🚨

What happened?
Google services and Cloud customers recently faced an unprecedented HTTP/2-based DDoS attack, reaching a staggering peak of 398 million requests per second.

Was there any outage?
Thanks to Google's global load balancing, the attack was halted at the edge of the network, preventing any outages.

Why is this novel?
While HTTP/2 was designed for efficiency, attackers exploited its feature, specifically "Stream multiplexing", to launch the Rapid Reset attack. By sending a reset request immediately after initiating a request, they created an exploitable cost asymmetry between servers and clients.

What's being done?
Google's DDoS Response Team added extra protection layers.
A coordinated disclosure process with industry partners has been initiated to address this HTTP/2 vector.
Google suggests implementing robust mechanisms in HTTP/3 servers to limit work done by a single transport connection.
Industry coordination
CVE-2023-44487 has been reserved to track fixes. Google and partners are working closely to notify large-scale HTTP/2 implementers.

What should you do?
If you run HTTP/2 services, evaluate your exposure. Apply patches and updates ASAP. Use Google's Application Load Balancer & Cloud Armor for added protection.
