Tonight & Tomorrow in Jewish History: Tisha B'Av

Holy Temples Destroyed (423 BCE and 69 CE)
Both the first and second Holy Temples which stood in Jerusalem were destroyed on Av 9: the First Temple by the Babylonians in the year 3338 from creation (423 BCE), and the second by the Romans in 3829 (69 CE).

The Temples' destruction represents the greatest tragedy in Jewish history, for it marks our descent into Galut--the state of physical exile and spiritual displacement in which we still find ourselves today. Thus the Destruction is mourned as a tragedy that affects our lives today, 2,000 years later, no less than the very generation that experienced it first hand.
Yet the Ninth of Av is also a day of hope. The Talmud relates that Moshiach ("anointed one"--the Messiah), was born at the very moment that the Temple was set aflame and the Galut began. [This is in keeping with the teachings of our sages that, "In every generation is born a descendant of Judah who is worthy to become Israel's Moshiach" (Bartinoro on Ruth); "When the time will come, G-d will reveal Himself to him and send him, and then the spirit of Moshiach, which is hidden and secreted on high, will be manifested in him" (Chatam Sofer).]

Tomorrow in Jewish History: Fast of Tammuz 17

The fast of the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, known as Shivah Asar B’Tammuz, is the start of a three-week mourning period for the destruction of Jerusalem and the two Holy Temples.

Abstaining from food and drink is the external element of a fast day. On a deeper level, a fast day is an auspicious day, a day when G‑d is accessible, waiting for us to repent.

The sages explain: “Every generation for which the Temple is not rebuilt, it is as though the Temple was destroyed for that generation.” A fast day is not only a sad day, but an opportune day. It’s a day when we are empowered to fix the cause of that destruction, so that our long exile will be ended and we will find ourselves living in messianic times; may that be very soon.

Fast Begins: 4:17 AM
Fast Ends: 8:56 PM

Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, of righteous memory, was the daughter of the sixth Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, of righteous memory, and wife of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory. The Rebbetzin’s influence on the Lubavitch movement was enormous, but she deliberately remained outside of the limelight.

Today in Jewish History: New Year for Trees

Today is Tu B'Shevat ("the 15th of Shevat") which marks the beginning of a "New Year for Trees." This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.

Legally, the "New Year for Trees" relates to the various tithes that must be separated from produce grown in the Holy Land. We mark the day by eating fruit, particularly from the "Seven Kinds" that are singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land (wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates). On this day we remember that "Man is a tree of the field" (Deuteronomy 20:19) and reflect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe assumes leadership (1951)
At a gathering of Chassidim marking the first anniversary of the passing of the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, the late Rebbe's son-in-law, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, delivered a Chassidic discourse (maamar) entitled Basi L'Gani ("I Came into My Garden"), signifying his formal acceptance of the leadership of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.

"When have you ignited a soul? When that soul ignites others."
-Chabad.org

As we leave Chanukah and go straight into Shabbat - from the lights of the Menorah to the Shabbat candles, let's take the messages these candles share with us to heart. To light a candle is to illuminate our surroundings, to share light with those around us. When our light shines so bright that it illuminates those around us to the point that they become lamplighters themselves, we have succeeded. For there is nothing like giving, and when one receives enough that they can give, too, that brings true purpose, joy and satisfaction.

Please light Shabbat candles in memory of Chana bat Yehuda Leib at 4:27 PM

Supernatural (Chanukah) 15/12/2023

Chanukah is here! In the cold, wintery nights we illuminate the Menorah. The Menorah reminds us that no matter how dark it is, light and goodness will triumph over it. This year, as you celebrate the holiday, be sure to not only light the Menorah in your home but illuminate your heart with some inspiration so that the glow of the candles, and its message, remain with you far beyond the eight days of Chanukah. I am sharing some short uplifting videos, with powerful messages, as a dose of Chanukah inspiration for you to watch and share with others.

If you haven't lit the Menorah because you don't have the supplies please contact us at [email protected] so we could be sure you are able to light the Menorah for the remainder of the holiday.

Wishing you a very happy Chanukah!
