They say it is best to let sleeping dogs lie, but that can't happen with today's Folk & Beyond. We will belatedly (by a day) celebrate Mike Marshall's birthday, Bruce Molsky's (today), as well as share a few tracks from the new Brittany Haas & Lena Jonsson album ahead of a track by track with them next week.

After being away the last couple weeks, there is plenty more on the playlist so hope you will join us from 4-7pm (eastern) this very day at 91.1FM WTJU and online at wtju.net/player.

Lonesome George is hosting his final edition of the Cosmic American Jamboree. Besides having hosted CAJ for the last 22 years, he has also been the WTJU Folk librarian all those years.

While we will certainly miss him, the good news is he will return in August as one of the hosts of Atlantic Weekly Part 1 with music from this side of the Atlantic. He will also pop up every now and again on Folk & Beyond and Sunset Road. But we will certainly miss his weekly presence each Thursday afternoon. Thanks Lonesome George!

Atlantic Weekly will be back down at Charlottesville City Market this Saturday from 8am-noon, and we typically have acoustic acts comfortable playing around condenser mics stop by to play (to promote their upcoming gigs and/or busk a bit with so many people walking by). Interested in possibly performing for 20-30 minutes with some conversation live on the radio at the market? Leave a comment below. Thanks

The Slocan Ramblers stopped by the Stage yesterday for a special video session which did not make it to the radio, so thought we'd air it this afternoon during Folk & Beyond. Don't miss them tonight at Reeves Theater in Elkins WV, and Saturday in Baltimore, MD at Charm City Bluegrass.

Sound check is wrapping up, and doors open at 7:30. On your way in to be part of the studio audience for Justin Golden w/ Devil's Coattails at Offbeat Roadhouse?

26/04/2024

One last reminder not to miss tonight's Offbeat Roadhouse featuring Justin Golden w/ Devil's Coattails. This band is about go national, and this might be the last time you get to see them in a listening room environment. We have had Trey and Chris in before, but this will be Justin and Drew's first time at WTJU.

Seriously, don't miss Justin Golden w/ Devil's Coattails at Offbeat Roadhouse. This will be one for the record books. Doors open at 7:30, and the concert will start precisely at 8.

23/04/2024

So looking forward to this Friday night's Offbeat Roadhouse with Justin Golden and Devil's Coattails. As Devon Léger wrote, "I’ve gotten plenty of flack in the past for saying bluegrass is complacent and I keep listening to new bluegrass coming out and hoping to be surprised, but so far this ain’t it. However, there have been TWO big developments this year that are heartening. Blues Americana artist Justin Golden out of Richmond, VA, just released a great album, Golden Country: Volume 1, with a VA bluegrass band that dives into the early roots of bluegrass and country before the industry segregated Black artists out of these genres." (see link to full story in the comment section).

Sure hope you can make it out this Friday night from 8-9 for Justin Golden w/ Devil's Coattails at Offbeat Roadhouse. Doors open at 7:30, and the as always FREE one hour concert starts at 8.

If you simply can't make it in to be part of the studio audience, you can listen over the air around Charlottesville at 91.1FM, streaming at wtju.net/player, or even video stream it at WTJU or youtube.com/wtju. The point is not to miss it.

Joe Ayers is sound checking ahead of tonight’s Offbeat Roadhouse. Doors open at 7:40, and the show starts precisely at 8. Coming in for Joe Ayers and early Ragtime sounds at Offbeat Roadhouse?

12/04/2024

Joe Ayers, known worldwide for his work in early banjo and guitar, rarely plays out these days. So when the opportunity arises, you do not want to miss it. Tonight is one of those times, so hope you can make it out to WTJU for his Offbeat Roadhouse.

Doors open at 7:30, and Joe Ayers and early Ragtime sounds at Offbeat Roadhouse starts precisely at 8.

It appears we will classing up the show a bit this afternoon, as we welcome UVA Music Department faculty Ayn Balija and I-Jen Fang to chat about next week's Women in Music Residency taking place at University of Virginia. It closes with these two musicians putting on a concert at Old Cabell Hall, UVA with compositions by JoVia Armstrong, Leah Reid, and Judith Shatin. wtju.net/womeninmusic/

Still working on the balance of the program, so comment below what other instrumental selections should be played.

Looking forward to bringing you the (Virginia at least if not world) radio debut of a killer young Jazz quartet out of Colorado this afternoon, along with a new tune from EZRA which are releasing the full album on Adhyâropa Records tomorrow. And as a cherry on top, a just released tune from back in 1986 featuring gone but certainly not forgotten NC group Laughing Crinoids.

Scott Fore sound checking ahead of tonight’s Scott Fore at Offbeat Roadhouse. Doors open at 7:30…

23/02/2024

A reminder that two-time national flatpicking guitar champion (and incredible multi-instrumentalist) Scott Fore is heading to Charlottesville this very night for his annual Offbeat Roadhouse concert. The guy has won so many other championships as well as being a Virginia Folklife Program (Virginia Humanities) master artist, so don't your opportunity to catch him tonight over at WTJU.

Doors open at 7:30, and Scott Fore at Offbeat Roadhouse starts precisely at 8. Don't be late...
