Custom foot orthotics are tailored to the individual’s specific foot structure and biomechanics. Varus and valgus postings are key modifications that can be made to orthotics to address unique needs, providing optimal support and alignment. By correcting the foot’s position, these postings can help alleviate pain, prevent injuries, and improve overall foot function.

✅Varus posting involves adding material to the medial (inner) side of the orthotic to elevate it. This adjustment helps control excessive inward rolling of the foot (pronation) by encouraging the foot to stay more aligned or tilt outward slightly.
•Purpose: Varus posting is commonly used for patients with overpronation, where the foot rolls excessively inward, leading to potential issues such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints, or knee pain. By providing support to the medial arch, varus posting helps distribute weight more evenly and align the foot and ankle properly.
•Benefits: improved foot alignment, reduced stress on the lower extremities, enhanced gait stability, and alleviation of pain associated with overpronation.

✅Valgus posting involves adding material to the lateral (outer) side of the orthotic to elevate it. This adjustment helps control excessive outward rolling of the foot (supination) by encouraging the foot to stay more aligned or tilt inward slightly.
•Valgus posting is beneficial for patients with oversupination, where the foot rolls outward excessively, potentially causing issues like ankle instability, stress fractures, or IT band syndrome. By supporting the lateral side of the foot, valgus posting helps promote better alignment and weight distribution.
•Benefits: enhanced foot stability, prevention of ankle sprains, Improved shock absorption, reduction of pain and discomfort associated with over-supination

Custom foot orthotics provide a range of benefits for your feet and overall musculoskeletal health. Here are some key advantages:

Pain Relief: By correcting abnormal foot mechanics, custom orthotics can alleviate pain caused by various conditions such as plantar fasciitis, arthritis, bunions, and heel spurs. They help distribute weight more evenly across your feet, reducing pressure points and discomfort.

Personalized Support: Custom orthotics are tailored to the unique shape and structure of your feet, offering specific support where you need it most. This helps in addressing individual foot issues more effectively compared to over-the-counter inserts.

Improved Alignment: Orthotics aid in aligning your feet, ankles, and lower body. Proper alignment can reduce stress on your knees, hips, and lower back, potentially alleviating pain and improving posture.

Injury Prevention: Custom orthotics can help prevent common foot injuries by supporting the arch, cushioning the heel, and promoting better foot mechanics. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with flat feet or high arches.

Better Balance and Stability: By providing a stable base, custom orthotics improve balance and stability. This is especially important for older adults or those with balance issues, as it can reduce the risk of falls.

Overall, custom foot orthotics offer a highly personalized solution to foot and lower body issues, promoting comfort, functionality, and overall well-being.

👣 Curious about custom foot orthotics? 🤔 We've got answers to some of your burning questions!

24/01/2024

Replacing custom foot orthotics every 2-3 years is important for several reasons, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal foot health.

‼️ Wear and Tear:
Custom foot orthotics experience wear and tear over time due to regular use. The materials used in orthotics can break down, compress, or lose their resilience over time. Replacing them every 2-3 years ensures that the orthotics continue to provide the necessary support and cushioning.

🦶 Changes in Foot Structure:
The structure of your feet can change over time due to factors such as age, weight fluctuations, or medical conditions. Custom orthotics are designed based on the specific contours and needs of your feet at a particular point in time. Regular replacement allows for adjustments to accommodate any changes in foot structure and ensure ongoing effectiveness.

💥Prevention of Discomfort or Pain:
As orthotics age and lose their original properties, they may no longer provide the level of support and correction needed. If individuals continue using worn-out orthotics, there's a risk of experiencing discomfort, pain, or a return of symptoms associated with foot conditions. Regular replacement helps prevent these issues.

👣 Long-Term Foot Health:
Custom foot orthotics are often prescribed to address specific foot conditions and promote long-term foot health. Regularly replacing orthotics ensures that individuals continue to receive the benefits of proper support, alignment, and relief from conditions such as plantar fasciitis, overpronation, or other biomechanical issues. Regular assessments and timely replacements contribute to sustained foot health and overall well-being.

Do your feet seem to roll outward when you're walking or running? Supination is defined as the natural outward roll of the foot during your walking or running stride, and it is a crucial part of weight distribution and shock absorption. But what happens when there is too much supination? Let's break it down:

Problems It Can Cause: If your foot over-supinates, it can lead to various lower extremity issues, including ankle instability, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and even stress fractures. Ouch! 😫

Custom foot orthotics can help address biomechanical imbalances as they provide the support and cushioning your unique feet need to correct over-supination.

Say goodbye to discomfort and pain! With custom foot orthotics, you can find the balance your feet crave and step confidently into a pain-free, active lifestyle. 🌟

Remember, healthy feet are the foundation of a strong body. So, invest in your well-being and take that step toward supination support! 👞👟

A biomechanical evaluation is a specialized assessment conducted by a pedorthist to thoroughly examine the mechanics and functioning of a person's musculoskeletal system, particularly in the lower extremities (feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back). The primary goal of a biomechanical evaluation is to understand how an individual's body moves and to identify any abnormalities or issues that may be contributing to pain, discomfort, or mobility problems.

Here are the key components of a biomechanical evaluation:

1. Medical History: Our pedorthists will start by gathering information about your medical history, including any previous injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions that may affect your lower body. They will also inquire about your current symptoms and activity level.

2. Physical Examination: A physical examination will be conducted, focusing on your posture, gait, and joint range of motion. The healthcare provider may observe how you stand, walk, and perform specific movements to identify any abnormalities or compensatory behaviors.

3. Foot Analysis: The evaluation involves a detailed analysis of your feet. This may include examining the arches, foot shape, alignment, and any visible abnormalities like bunions or flat feet.

Custom foot orthotics are specially designed insoles or inserts that are tailored to the individual's feet. These orthotics are used to alleviate the symptoms of plantar fasciitis and provide several benefits:

Arch Support: Custom orthotics are designed to provide proper arch support, which helps distribute pressure evenly across the foot. This reduces the strain on the plantar fascia and can alleviate pain associated with plantar fasciitis.

Alignment Correction: Orthotics can help correct biomechanical issues in the foot, such as overpronation (excessive inward rolling of the foot) or supination (insufficient inward rolling), which can contribute to plantar fasciitis. By improving foot alignment, orthotics reduce stress on the plantar fascia.

Shock Absorption: Custom orthotics are often made from materials that absorb shock and provide cushioning, reducing the impact on the plantar fascia during walking and other activities.

Pressure Redistribution: Orthotics can redistribute pressure away from the painful areas of the foot, promoting healing of the inflamed plantar fascia.

Improved Foot Function: By supporting the foot's natural arch and correcting alignment issues, orthotics can enhance overall foot function, reducing the likelihood of re-injury.

During an initial evaluation, our certified pedorthists perform a thorough assessment of a patient's biomechanics and will examine the patient from the mid-back down to the feet and examine a patient's foot structure. This assessment allows our team to create orthotics that are specifically tailored to your individual needs.

It's important to note that while custom foot orthotics can be highly effective in reducing pain and discomfort associated with plantar fasciitis, they are just one component of a comprehensive treatment plan. Other treatments, such as stretching exercises, physical therapy, proper footwear, and lifestyle modifications, may also be recommended to manage and prevent the recurrence of plantar fasciitis.

Foot pain can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from minor issues like overuse or improper footwear to more serious medical conditions. Here are some common causes of foot pain:

👟 Footwear: Wearing shoes that don't fit properly or provide inadequate support can lead to various foot problems and pain.

🦶 Plantar Fasciitis: This is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs when the band of tissue that supports the arch of your foot (the plantar fascia) becomes inflamed or irritated.

⚡️ Metatarsalgia: This condition causes discomfort and pain in the metatarsal region of the foot, which is the area between the arch of the foot and the toes. It typically occurs when there is excess pressure on the metatarsal bones or when the fat pads in the sole of the foot become thin and less effective at cushioning and protecting the bones.

🦴 Bunions: A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. It can be painful, especially when wearing tight shoes.

🔆 Morton's Neuroma: This condition involves a thickening of the tissue around the nerves leading to the toes, often causing pain and numbness in the ball of the foot.

👣 Flat Feet (Pes Planus): Some people have low or no arches in their feet, which can lead to pain and discomfort, especially if they don't have proper arch support in their shoes.

😣 Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons in the foot, such as the posterior tibial tendon or peroneal tendons, can cause pain and instability.

Are you experiencing any of these symptoms? Custom foot orthotics help to realign your mechanics resulting in less stress and pressure on your joints. They help to redistribute pressure away from painful or sensitive areas of the foot while also providing customized arch support, improved cushioning, and enhanced shock absorption.

The average life span of a custom foot orthotic is around 2 years. Activity and usage can play a role in the longevity of the device. Individuals who run high mileage or are on their feet for hours everyday (we're looking at you healthcare and industrial workers!) may notice more wear of the device due to it's increased usage. If you're noticing more lower extremity symptoms and it's been 2+ years since your last pair of orthotics, it's likely time to upgrade to a new pair. More commonly asked orthotic questions this week 🤓

Many patients ask us if they need a re-evaluation after lower extremity surgery and the answer is YES! Surgery can change your biomechanics, and if you’re still wearing a pair of orthotics that was made prior to your surgery, you likely aren’t getting the correct support you need!
