Let’s talk about another non-native plant that is now banned from sale in PA, but up until recently was still a very common landscaping choice. Euonymus alatus, commonly known as “burning bush” or “winged euonymus”, was introduced from Asia in the 1860s. It quickly became a prized ornamental specimen due to its hardiness, interesting winged stems, attractive berries, and red fall foliage.

Unfortunately, it almost as quickly escaped landscaped areas and is now naturalized in over 25 states, including Pennsylvania and Delaware. Several factors led to its invasive nature, including virtually no natural predators feeding on or killing it, its formation of dense thickets that shade out natives, and high seed production.

We’ve seen many other alternatives to Euonymus alatus over the years, including red chokeberry, fothergilla, and winterberry holly. But we are feeling especially excited about Vaccinium corymbosum. We like a landscaping plant that can pull double or triple duty, and highbush blueberry fits the bill.

Not only does its very pretty, bell-shaped flowers have way more spring interest than burning bush’s, it attracts a ton of pollinators. In the summer, you can look forward to, as the name suggests, blueberries! That is, if you can steal any away from the songbirds - highbush blueberries are excellent for native wildlife. And, just like burning bush, it has brilliant red fall foliage. Add in the fact that it’s stems are typically red and you’ve got a plant that looks attractive in winter as well. Four season interest, edible fruit, and non-invasive. What’s not to love?

Have a burning bush (or seven) that you'd like us to tear out and swap for a native alternative? Give us a call today!

Some people may ask ... "why is fall good for planting and landscaping?"

Fall is a great time for planting and landscaping for several reasons. The cooler temperatures and increased rainfall create ideal growing conditions for plants, allowing them to establish strong root systems before winter. In addition, many nurseries and garden centers offer sales and discounts on plants and landscaping materials during the fall season. Planting in the fall also gives plants a head start on growth in the spring, resulting in fuller, more mature plants earlier in the season. Finally, fall foliage provides a beautiful backdrop for any new landscaping additions.
