Did you know that Housework has a Seed Share?
-
We offer free seeds on our site as an open, community-based resource to ensure that everyone has access to seeds for growing something of their own. The collection changes based on contributions, and the amount of what's available ebbs and flows throughout the year, but there's always something.
-
We've got some new seeds in the collection that we've saved from our own garden, and would love to share them with you, with some more coming soon. If you have seeds you would like to contribute, please let us know!

DISHES THAT INSPIRE
-
Don't know about you, but for us the way food is presented is half the art of a meal. Just looking at these beauts has us thinking up all sorts of kitchen creations.
-
This late September we've been making lots of small plates, tacos especially, to utilize the garden's end of summer meets early fall abundance. Roasting sweet and spicy chili peppers, sautéing heirloom potatoes, grilling corn, transforming perfectly ripe tomatoes into Salsa Mexicana (à la Diana Kennedy), and topping with our new favorite local farm's goat cheese.

Every natural making technique has its place, but when it comes to dyeing, we're major proponents of yarn dyeing vs. garment dyeing.
-
Yarn dyeing is substantially more colorfast (meaning the color holds to the fiber longer), and in our humble opinion usually tends to lead to more interesting design results. Ikat, tartan, overshoot, houndstooth, many iconic woven and knit patterns are intrinsically linked to yarn-dyeing.

One of the most satisfying tools in the kitchen: a suribachi.
-
Suribachi are a Japanese mortar, with fine hand carved grooves making for a uniquely textured final product, whether it be chilis, spices, miso, or tofu. This particular suribachi is made of rich Iga clay, local to the potters, and comes paired with a beautiful raw sansho wood surikogi.

Blue - a color so vibrant and so emotive yet also somehow culturally agreed upon as neutral enough to go with everything (think: blue jeans). Is it our associations with the sky and sea, the endless expanses of blue we are so deeply familiar with, that lend it this ubiquitous position?

Always down to get nerdy and dirty. This funky vintage publication is all about transforming human 'waste' into valuable crop fertilizer. Just one of the many simple ways in which we need to rethink the systems we revolve our lives around.

We recently went on a textile research trip and have been feeling especially inspired by ikat. The virtuosity involved in creating the beautiful Balinese indigo ikat for the Dream Delivery Jacket from .as.clothing in the SS22 collection is more apparent to us than ever as we chat with dyers, weavers, and designers who specialize in this tradition.

One of the most captivating aspects of Mexican life and culture is their sense of detail in design. When we were in Mexico City for our honeymoon a few years back, we were floored by how normal it was for even the most casual cafes to have absurdly beautiful chairs. Doorways, gates, facades, the most beautiful lamp we've ever seen – Mexico has a way with design unique unto itself.

Why we love dry brushing:
-
1) It feels amazing! Dry brushing wakes up your senses in a unique and powerful way, which makes it a great way to start your day. The post-dry brush sensation is similar to the sort of physical high you might get after a massage or acupuncture, and it's one of those rare things that feel just as good whether you do it yourself or have a partner.
-
2) It helps detoxify your skin by increasing blood circulation and allowing better lymph flow and drainage. Also, by unclogging pores it allows toxins to more easily release from your system.
-
3) Dry brushing vs. brushing in the shower or bath allows your body to retain more of its natural healthy oils and proteins, whereas intense exfoliation while bathing can remove these nutrients necessary to healthy skin and irritate sensitive skin as hot water causes temporary inflammation. The unique exfoliating properties of dry brushing leave your skin feeling silky smooth and give your body an all over glow.
-
For best results, try dry brushing every other day before you bathe or shower. Any dead skin cells will easily wash off and you'll emerge feeling renewed and energized. We recommend applying a deeply nourishing Tallow Balm afterward to allow your skin to properly rehydrate.
