October is National Physical Therapy Month!
So, we want you to meet one of our amazing DPT’s, Kevin Peterson. Kevin’s passion for the PT field started when he was 12 years old, experiencing his friend with Cerebral Palsy go through a serious surgery which landed him in a hospital bed in his living room for 8 weeks. He wanted to help and thought that a claw grabber would help him reach things around him. From this experience he began to learn about adaptive equipment and assistive technology which, in combination with his personal experiences with sports and his own injuries, led him to pursue physical therapy.
In his free time, Kevin enjoys playing games on his computer, 3D modeling and virtual development, eating good food, and spending time with family. He is very excited to be able to bring his exercise background through sports into this area of physical therapy to create fun and engaging activities for all the kids to develop and experience life as independently and have as many opportunities as all others.
We are fortunate to have Kevin as part of our team and appreciate all the expertise and creative that he brings to his sessions!

When teaching children new skills, it is not unusual that they will initially require some support in the form of prompts and cues. Prompts can prove to be very effective to help reduce frustration, can ensure progress towards targeted goals, and provide support with difficult tasks to make the learning process easier.
It is important however that when using prompts that we systematically fade them as soon as possible to prevent the child from becoming overly reliant on those prompts as this can lead to prompt dependence and impede skill acquisition and independence. A plan for fading prompts should be established at the onset of instruction.
To learn about fading prompts be sure to check out our latest blog post, "Using Time Delay to Fade Prompts"

Looking for an evidence-based intervention that effectively targets the foundations of social communication using a naturalistic developmental approach?
JASPER may be exactly what you are looking for. JASPER uses a combination of naturalistic, developmental, and behavioral strategies to increase the rate and complexity of social communication including joint attention, engagement, and play.
Strategies such as environmental arrangement, use of play routines, imitation, and modeling are utilized during play to support children's learning and engagement.
McRory Pediatrics is excited to bring this additional intervention framework to its practice.

Choose Your Words Wisely!
Do you remember hearing your child’s first word? What a wonderful milestone! And as your child says more and more you start to feel a deeper connection with them. After all it is exciting to get a glimpse into what they know, what they think, what they are interested in, and what they want.
But what happens as they reach closer to 18-24 months, and you are not hearing any two-word combinations yet? Should you worry or be concerned?
Typically, children will not start to combine words until they have an expressive vocabulary of about 30-50 words. But the type of words also matters. For example, if your little one’s vocabulary is predominately made up of labels for objects, chances are they will not put 2-words together. After all, if they said, “apple car” is not going to make a lot of sense.
So, words matter! And, not just words, but word types. Children need words from a variety of categories, including labels for objects (nouns), descriptive words (adjectives), and action words (verbs) to start building phrases.
In my most recent blog post, I share some simple ideas that will have your little one chattering up a storm in no time.
