Friends, today we celebrate the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, the first witness of Christ’s rising, who declared the Resurrection to the Apostles (John 20:1–2, 11–18).

In point of fact, the Easter declaration, properly understood, has always been and still is an explosion, an earthquake, a revolution. For the Easter faith is that Jesus of Nazareth, who had been brutally put to death by the Roman authorities, is alive again through the power of the Holy Spirit—and not in some metaphorical sense.

That the Resurrection is a literary device or a symbol that Jesus’ cause goes on is a fantasy born in the faculty lounges of Western universities over the past couple of centuries. The still startling claim of the first witnesses is that Jesus rose bodily from death, presenting himself to his disciples to be seen, even handled.

The hope of ancient Israel was the unification of heaven and earth in a great marriage. Recall a central line from the Lord’s Prayer: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” The bodily Resurrection of Jesus is the powerful sign that the two orders are in fact coming together.

Blessed and Immaculate Virgin, splendid beauty of Carmel, you look with love on all who wear your blessed habit; look kindly on me and spread the mantle of your loving protection over all mankind.

By the power of your intercession strengthen my weakness, and by your wisdom light up the darkness of my mind.

Increase in me those virtues in which you excelled — faith, hope and love; adorn my soul with such graces and virtues that it may ever be pleasing to your divine Son.

Assist me in all the activities of life, and, by your presence console me at the time of my death.

In that hour present me to the Blessed Trinity as your child redeemed by the blood of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

I, an unworthy sinner, do this day, in the presence of thy beloved Son, my Saviour, choose thee for my Patroness, that through thy intercession, I may receive from Him whatsoever grace may be necessary and profitable for me now, and at the hour of my death. Amen.

O most Holy Mary, Our Mother, in your great love for us you gave us the Holy Scapular of Mount Carmel, having heard the prayers of your chosen son Saint Simon Stock. Help us now to wear it faithfully and with devotion.

May I, unworthy as I am, come one day to exchange your scapular that I had the privilege to wear for the wedding garment of heaven, and dwell with you and all the saints of Carmel in the kingdom of your Son.

God, I entreat You to watch over and care for those who are less fortunate than I am. Especially keep in Your care those in third world countries who do not have enough food, water, or shelter to survive.

You saw the needs of God’s people, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Long before you were even the mother of Christ, the Israelites attributed the ending of the drought as a result of your intercession.

Since the beginning of time, you’ve been the advocate of God’s people. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, I ask you now to watch over those who still are poor and suffering today. Fold them in the mantle of your love. Petition Our Lord to save them from their distress.

Inspire me and my church to also consider ways we can help the under-served around the world, like your Son taught us.
