Reflection is a great way to learn! We wanted to put together a few prompts to help you all reflect as we move into the new year! We have shared journaling prompts that are meant to make you write and let your mind dissect the ideas and emotions as you write. Meditation prompts are similar but are meant to really be starting places to let your mini meditation journey begin from. Sometimes reflection can be uncomfortable and other times it can be completely liberating. Either way after a couple reflection sessions you will no doubt be more mindful of yourself!

The start of a new year offers a unique opportunity to look both forwards and backwards. Mental Health and Mental Wellness can be closely associated to mindfulness and self-awareness. We at encourage you all to take time to both reflect on your past year as well as set goals for the year to come. Over the next couple days we will post ideas and prompts for journaling and/or meditating in reflection and outline good goal setting techniques. In the meantime, comment some things you were grateful for during the past year and goals you have set for yourself in the upcoming year to inspire others!

Clinical care is an important part of caring for the mental health of your student athletes, but there are many other ways to offer support. We at Athlete Mental Health Link believe that anyone and everyone can benefit from furthering their education about mental health. Mental Health education can help an individual better navigate their own mental health as well as be a support for those around them. This education can help your sport organization build a sturdy foundation where everyone is helping support each other!

Please join Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD), a valued partner of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, as they celebrate the opening of the new Children's Pavilion on Saturday, October 1. The new 14-story mental health hospital and outpatient center features an outdoor sports pavilion on the top floor because in the words of CHKD: "children need activity for healing."

The public is invited to celebrate the opening of this amazing facility as part of Community Day, which will feature tours of the facility, family friendly activities, and a visit from the ODU Men's Basketball team.

UNC declared a Mental Health day after 2 suspected su***de events.
Will this be the wake up call for our collegiate institutions?

3 Barriers for collegians to seek MH supports

1) Mental Health Illiteracy (They don't know what they don't know!)

2) Access to Clinical Supports (Campus Counseling Centers are understaffed & most are only open 9-5pm Mon-Fri with weeks long waiting lists)

3) Stigma
(Stigma has decreased but there are still cultural- religious barriers still at play)

How to CORRECT the Barriers
1) Mental Health Educational Programming (Provide integrated MH curriculum for students, professors & staff)

2) Offer on-line options for clinical supports that meet the students time needs ( - right)

3) Have Strong Campus Mental Health Awareness Programs

Reach out on ways we can help your campuses

Sports can be an extremely positive asset to a youth’s development, so long as a healthy balance of self-identity is established. When there is a high level of athletic identity, there is greater risk for problems that can affect both the physical and mental health of the athlete. Athletes that over-identify often specialize in a sport too early in their development. They may do whatever it takes to be on a team or maintain a starting position, even if it involves unhealthy and unethical choices, like lying about not being injured or using performance enhancing drugs. Coaches, parents, and athletes are invited to join the conversation about the importance of supporting a positive youth’s self-identity that is healthy and balanced.
