This is a picture of an ear cytology from a dog with an ear infection. There are two main organisms that live in the ear-yeast (circled in pink) and bacteria (circled in yellow)-and they work to keep each other in check.
When a pet gets an ear infection the balance of these organisms has been disrupted and one or both of them have been able to grow out of control.
The trouble is, we don't know which it is unless we look at it under the microscope (this image was taken at 1000x magnification). Which is why we always need to do an ear swab before giving any medication. If we give a medication to hamper the wrong organism not only will it not help but it can actually make the infection worse for your pet.
