Growing conditions like weather, rainfall, etc. can make the exact same coffee taste different season after season. This Uganda is a prime example. Last year, this was a fantastic light roast. After playing around for a while, we've decided that a nice, medium roast created the most balance with lots of sweetness. We hope you enjoy this new lot.

Wowzers! We have something special going on here. A natural process sundried coffee that is a total fruit bomb but also has a nice, smooth acidity for a fantastic light roast.

🇹🇿 Tanzania Mbeya Mwangoka Natural

COFFEE STATS

Roast: Light
Acidity: Mild
Body: Light
Altitude: 1450-1850 masl
Process: Natural
Varietal: Bourbon, Compact
Producers: GD Mwangoka Farm, Grivas D. Mwangoka
What We Taste: Tropical Fruit, Strawberry, Clementine

The Grivas family took up stewardship of GDM Farm over 20 years ago, and as the second generation to manage one of the few Tanzanian-owned coffee estates, Richard Grivas has his sights set on improving quality and the local community through the farm. Over 200 seasonal workers are part of GDM’s operation, and the farm also supports a network of smallholders living in the surrounding vicinity. Only around 5% of Tanzania’s green coffee comes from large estates. GDM Farm spans 400 hectares at an altitude of 1980msl in the southern highlands near the Mbozi meteorite that was discovered in the 1930s.

Tanzania has all of the potential in the world. It is one of the largest countries in Africa by area, and its annual Arabica production rivals its better-known neighbor, Kenya. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that Tanzania’s green coffee production will grow at one of the world’s fastest rates, but supply chain complexity could slow things down.

We made it back safely from Costa Rica with lots of wonderful memories. We tasted coffee from local producers, enjoyed sunset walks along the beach to watch the fire dancers, went to an active volcano to zip line and tubed down a river with 29 different rapids!

Now we're back and all stocked up on our favorite coffee from Peru...Cafe Minca! Coffees from Peru have always been favorites of ours and our customers because of their deliciously balanced, sweet and full-bodied flavors that taste like a classic cup of coffee. This Minca lot is a prime example of what Peruvian coffee is capable of, as it sets itself apart from other South American beans.

COFFEE STATS

Roast: Medium
Acidity: Balanced
Body: Heavy
Altitude: 1200-1750 masl
Process: Washed
Varietal: Caturra, Bourbon, Typica, Pache, Catimor

PERU MINCA

In the Qechua language, in the Andes, Minca refers to a particular camaraderie between farmers. While producers will hire help for the harvest, during the year, they depend on their neighbors. Groups will travel from farm to farm, accomplishing what needs to be done before moving on to the next farm. This idea of caring for the whole — this social bond — is known as Minca. Every producer who contributed to this lot processed the beans on his or her farm. They washed the beans, fermented them for 10 to 18 hours and then dried them on their patios with a mantada, a special textile, to prevent contamination.

Located between the Andes Mountains and the rainforest, Satipo, a province in the region of Junin, is also known as the ceja de selva, or, “jungle entrance.” It’s a region rich in biodiversity and with very asymmetrical topography, which creates different types of airflows that help the coffee trees to flourish. During the 1980s and early 90’s, Peru suffered tremendously due to terrorism, and Junin was possibly the most affected area in the country. For more than a decade, they massacred producers and prevented Junin and other regions from progressing. Many lost their homes and farms, but they survived and fought to keep their lands.

Just restocked our Sulawesi Tana Toraja! Indulge in the bold flavors of Sulawesi coffee, resembling Sumatra but grown at higher altitudes, resulting in a cleaner and distinct taste. Ideal for a filtered brew or a wild and delightful single-origin espresso, perfect for the adventurous coffee connoisseur.

COFFEE STATS

Roast: Medium Dark
Acidity: Mild
Body: Medium
Altitude: 1300 -2000 masl
Process: Giling Basah
Varietal: Catimor, S-795
Producers: Various Smallholders
What We Taste: Dark Chocolate, Cedar, Elderberry, Dried Plum

Discover the essence of Sulawesi’s coffee production, thriving in the elevated Tana Toraja highlands, a sanctuary for smallholder farmers tending to their crops amidst mountain slopes reaching up to 2000 meters. The soil’s mild acidity and the region’s fluctuating day-to-night temperatures within a wet, humid microclimate impart a distinctive character to these coffee beans, often planted in a wild, organic manner, embracing their full-bodied richness and earthy notes.

At the heart of Sulawesi’s coffee legacy lies the resilient S-795 cultivar, also known as Jember, showcasing early resistance to the notorious leaf rust epidemic that plagued Indonesia in the 19th century. This cultivar is celebrated not only for its resilience but also for its inherent sweetness, infusing this Sulawesi green coffee with a unique and delightful profile.

Indonesia holds a rich 400-year-old coffee history, beginning with smuggled Yemeni seeds and early cultivation on Java by Dutch colonists. Following the devastating leaf rust outbreak, many plantations shifted towards the disease-resistant Robusta species. Today, Indonesia stands as the world’s fourth-largest coffee producer, with 90% of its volume coming from smallholder farmers, epitomizing a shift away from large estates. The traditional wet-hulled (Giling Basah) process, imparting a distinctive rich and intense flavor, has become a hallmark of Indonesian green coffee beans.

CAFFEINATE YOUR ADVENTURES

Strigo Coffee...a third wave coffee micro-roastery with a focus on roasting ultra premium Arabica beans and shipping to our subscribers within 72 hours. Our coffee tastes best after a few days rest, so you’ll be receiving your coffee at the peak of flavor! We are mainly a subscription service but do sell wholesale to independent cafes & restaurants, as well as retail on strigocoffee.com. We also do farmers markets and private events such as weddings. Our coffee is specifically roasted to bring out the unique and delicious flavors of each bean. All of our coffee's are cupped 7 times before they reach you to ensure they meet our high standards.

We are starting with some fantastic single origin offerings. We like to roast these light or medium to preserve the flavors of each origin but we'll soon have some great blends as well that will be roasted to bring out the best flavors of each bean. We also have our espresso/dark blend that is amazing as a shot, in a milk-based espresso drink or brewed drip style like a pour over or in a standard coffee machine. If you prefer a darker roast for your cup of brewed coffee, we recommend the espresso/dark blend, as it is roasted a little longer than our single origin offerings but without burning the beans or releasing too much oil. The end result is a bold, yet smooth cup of coffee that's sure to please.
