On July 18, VAWNYHS staff and members of the VAWNYHS African American Emphasis Committee volunteered to work alongside members of the Gethsemane Grape Street Baptist Church and Mayor’s Summer Youth Program to build a 400 square foot urban garden to benefit Veterans and their families on the East side of Buffalo. The "Veterans Community Garden – Honoring Service, Cultivating Unity" is a welcome addition to communinity.
The garden was made possible through the generosity of WNYHeroes.org, LM Stone & Topsoil LTD., Tractor Supply Co., The Home Depot, and Niagara Produce of Elma.

They put on their thinking caps to recall the people, places, events, and foods that make our region special. Extra memories were stimulated with vintage postcards and a lively discussion.
Cardboard Josh Allen made sure to greet each resident with a lively "Hey-ey-ey-ey" before a taste-test of "Buffalo-flavored" chips (followed closely by sips of loganberry to cleanse the palate). Local history buffs proudly answered the trivia challenge questions. And the day closed with the old-time sounds of the Mr. Softee jingle filling the halls and birch-beer floats served in commemorative tumblers.
