Plant Spirit Series: Lavender - Linden - Lilac

Working with plant spirit can expand and enhance your plant practice, as well as create opportunity for us to cultivate relationships in new ways.

Sunday Sept. 15th and 22nd:

Lavender - Lavender means a lot to us as humans. We have a long history of day-to-day relationship with Lavender with good reason. Lavender Spirit will work with us though the harmony of the mind, thoughts and inter-relatedness.
Materials: dried Lavender, Lavender flower honey.

Linden - Our meeting with Linden, also known as Basswood, will work with the alignment of head and heart, and working with the heart as a metabolizer, cleanser and healer. We will work with the Linden flowers, and our own flowering hearts.
Materials: dried Linden flowers, Linden pollen honey.

Lilac - The work with Lilac Spirit can be so varied for people! In this offering we will work with one of the core aspects of Lilac in managing our own permeability and allowing things to pass through, or by-pass, without attachment. This is another aspect of working with our own energetic boundaries, be it within daily life or in a larger context of of what is happening around us or even within our own lineages.
Materials: dried Lilac flowers, Lilac flower infused honey.

Jason and I were admiring our tree blossoms, and I was looking for bumblebee queens (just took a class on bumblebee ID) and we found and I correctly identified this Common Eastern Bumblebee Queen! She is on our crabapple tree by our chicken coop. The apple trees seem to attract a lot more bees than the pear blossoms do. I had my nose in all the blossoms this week, the pears don’t smell but the apple and cherry blossoms have a nice sweet scent. The cherries smell strongly like cherries.

So many times the body pain, mental health challenges and the sense of something missing turns out to be needed psychopomp care. Our society is just starting to embrace the idea of personal sovereignty. This is not just a right, but a responsibly. Each winter I offer an opportunity to sit with plants and let them into your everyday life. This Apprenticeship with the plants is a way to "sit" with them and also to invite them into other aspects of your life through relationship. A blissful day today with Woods Rose, also known as Mountain Rose. The birds have planted them here and there and everywhere. The petals are so thin and delicate with a lovey scent. So different from my Rosa rugosa.

Midsummer Dream
Plant Spirit Bath

Midsummer is the one day of the year where Plants are at their most potent, where the magic of the intense sun is captured in leaves and blossoms. The Plants in the Midsummer Dream Bath Blend were hand gathered by me on Midsummer eve morning just in time include a bit of dew on the Plants, then air dried.

At the end of winter when we find ourselves growing weary, a bit of depression coming in, is when we need the energy of Midsummer the most.

I prefer to take a quick shower to clean, then draw a bath. Use the included re-usable muslin bag to add a tablespoon or two of plants, tie it closed, then add to your bath. Invite yourself to soak in the radiance of Midsummer.

Two sizes available, the 8 ounce tin, shown in the photos, includes a blend of plants with Mugwort, Hypericum, Elder Flower, Rose, Hyssop and many others. The 2 ounce tin has less diverse plants and is mostly Elder Flowers with bits of the other plants.

Angelica and Elder

These two plants have been worked with in many traditions. They can be the bookends, the place holders of sorts, to the two ends of the cosmic World Tree. One, Angelica, represents the very top of the Tree where the light is the brightest. Angelica is known to be very protective, especially against intrusive energies and has strong warding capabilities if she is willing. Elder, represents the root ends, the below ground level, and is also protective in a different way and is known as undoer of curses. Both plants are allies of the traveler.

We will explore these two plants, how they were worked with in European and other traditions, and while working with the spirit of these two plants, discover how we relate to them as individuals and what work might lie between us.



Both Angelica and Elder are powerful and challenging, in the best of ways. In my opinion, they are plants everyone should get to know, especially those with European ancestry. Some will find they may have a strong affinity for one or the other.



In medicinal herbalism, both Angelica and Elder are known as potent healers of those who are physically ill. Working with the right plant spirit to address underlying energetics/spirit of the ailment is a different way of approaching healing work, in partnership with the Plant Spirit. The preparations of the plant are different from those of medicinal herbalism.

"Rue" - Featured Plant Spirit from the Apprenticeship and the Psychopomp class.

Who is Rue? Well, in the realm of herbs we have heard the word “Rue” quite a lot. Common-Rue, Wild-Rue, Rue-Anemone, Meadow-Rue and many, many others. Most of them have no botanical relationship to one another. So why are so many called Rue?

In French, the word “rue” refers to a pathway, a route, a way to get from here to there. Could the naming of a plant have something to do with pathways?



We will be working with two of the “Rue’s” this year in the Plant Spirit Apprenticeship, “Plants, Trees and Ritual”. Common-Rue and Wild-Rue (also known as Syrian-Rue).



Rue has fallen out of fashion in medicinal herbalism in modern times. There have been many fearful articles written about toxicity. When I asked regional herbalists if they worked with Rue, almost all of them said no with some look of confusion (What would I use Rue for?) or rarely, they grew Common-Rue but had never harvested or worked with the plant. When looking for locally grown Rue, I came up with almost nothing.



Where Rue is worked with is in secret, in magic and in ritual. Especially known for protection and purification, and deeply tied to several sacred traditions throughout the world.



Rue is a plant being that demands respect. We work with this ancient plant, coming to know more than her botany, uses, history and lore. We come to learn from her, how to be in relationship with a powerful plant being and how to be a partner with her in our own work.

This is an intensive class, you will need to be in a quiet space by yourself with your plant box materials for class. Even away from my herb gardens, the herbs come with me. During the growing season I always have some mugwort cut to work with through the week. A bag of dried herbs come with me for offerings for the land that is receiving me.

Herbs filter in to me either through my harvests or friends bringing them to me. Those that know me well, hear the herbs calling to come to me and bring them. I’m very grateful to have friends nearby who know how to listen.
