Monica Dix, Artist
Fine art paintings: landscapes, portraits, figurative, still life. Life can be an overwhelming torrent.
Artist's Statement:
A portrait which holds a glimpse of personality, of the soul, can be a touchstone. We all need these rich and daily reminders of our deep connections to each other, to our children, our parents, our siblings. I catch my breath, draw on moments of ordinary beauty, and make little islands of peace in everyday life.
Progress in reverse. Demo drawing for my students in Studio Art 1, using a cast of the face of Michelangelo’s Dawn which adorns the tomb of Lorenzo Duke of Urbino in Florence. Got this lovely cast from and a grant from
30-40 hours of drawing, over three weeks, while teaching FT. It can be done. (Early mornings, evenings, weekends, waking up and creating first.) This is my portrait of John Muir, part of my series of drawings of great Americans. Should I make prints? I’ll definitely be making stickers.

Intrigued by realism? Me, too! I often do assigned drawings along with my students, going beyond the 'getting started' demo. Here is a 9x12" drawing of the ear we all worked on together.
Did you know I can make an etching-style print of your pet? Check out my custom pet portraits (on my website).
My grant proposal is live! You can donate any amount, to fund a collection of sculpture for my art students:
Three works in progress, inspired by my time in Cornwall 🏴
I have wanted to make a detailed drawing of this beautiful sculpture for years! The sculptor, Marton Varo, made this radiant image of Christ as the Good Shepherd in memory of a beloved young man from a founding family of our "town with a Catholic heart", Ave Maria.
Time to announce the winner of my giveaway!
A huge congratulations to Tessa Jones!

A vivid memory from my childhood and living (briefly) in St. Croix: playing outside, and finding a frangipani blossom and breathing in its fragrance. My dad told me what it was called, and that was fun to say! Twenty-five years later, I moved to Florida, where these heavenly blooms can be grown in your backyard. This painting began as a pile of studies and photos from the Naples Botanical Garden and finished in oil in my studio. I wanted to capture the freshness and radiance of the flowers. Later, my husband planted a Frangipani outside my studio window!

Thought I’d share some mom-related art to celebrate my mom and motherhood today.

Work in progress. Copying George Washington’s portrait as painted by Gilbert Stuart (the first of the Vaughan group).
If the rules (ok, guidelines?) for the challenge are to make 100 portraits in 100 days, I’m going to do exactly that. (Lmk !) When school is out in about 19 days, I will have some days where I can make two portraits in one day. I’ll make up for the slow-down!
Day 15 - 100 Day Portrait Challenge

This one is a work in progress, and I don’t want to move on to another tomorrow! I’m using one of Gilbert Stuart’s portraits of George Washington, known as the Gibbs-Channing-Avery portrait. It’s on view at the Met in New York. It’s one of a group of 18 similar paintings copied from this one, which was painted from life. The 18 paintings are known as the Vaughan group. Since I am making a copy, too, it’s all starting to feel like a hall of mirrors. Imitating masters is a good way to learn. I find this much easier than painting from photos, but still a flatter and less exciting than painting from life. I wonder how Stuart felt…

I’m looking forward to having a little more time to paint my daily portrait. For now, it’s drawings.
