REIA Meeting tonight: 7PM at Bednar Funeral Home.

Rental Assistance will be among the topics discussed.

15/08/2020

Hello members,

I'm pushing for us to have a meeting soon. I'm not sure if that will work out, but we'll see. The Inn at Reading will have no room rentals for the rest of the year so we would need a different venue.

I'm on a panel for the City of Reading to help them assemble a grant for lead paint remediation and other hazardous situations. If they get it, it could be a real help for residents and landlords.

I also received the following important message from Kimberly Talbot, Executive Director, City of Reading Human Relations Commission. [email protected]

I don’t know if you are aware of this information regarding the rental assistance monies available to renters due to COVID. I wanted to provide this information to you so that potentially you would pass it on to your members.

The Reading Human Relations Commission (RHRC) Berks Community Action Program (BCAP) and the Berks Coalition to end homelessness (BCEH) have funding for (city) residents that owe and are facing eviction. Some of the funding needs eviction notices from the court, other funding (from the coalition) does not. BCEH, BCAP and Family Promise have funding for county residents.

Please encourage your members to refer their tenants to www.readingpa.gov or bceh.org. On our website the rental application is called ESG application. BCAP requires a telephone call.

WHAT’S HAPPENING:
PA State Senator Thomas Killion is introducing a bill known as the
COVID-19 EMERGENCY RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

This bill will pay the rent in arrears of residential tenants affected by COVID-19.
The rent payments will go directly to the landlords.

Senator Killian is looking for other PA senators to co-sponsor this legislation.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING PROA MEMBERS TO DO:
PLEASE contact your own PA State Senator IMMEDIATELY.

Ask them to co-sponsor and support this bill!

TALKING POINTS:
Rental housing is an important factor in the economy. It is essential.

This will help tenant and rental housing providers alike.

Most rental housing providers do not want to evict tenants for non-payment of rent
due to circumstances beyond their control.

This assistance will help rental housing providers meet their financial obligations.

The rental housing industry not only pays taxes, but also supports many trades,
such as contractors, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, and more.

This rental assistance for tenants will have a domino effect, helping to boost our
economy.
