Speaking to an audience in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" β¨ Today, as we celebrate Dr. King, a man who stood for courage, hope, and equity, let's embrace this powerful question. Whether it's volunteering, lending a helping hand to a neighbor, or simply spreading kindness, every action counts.
Reminder we are closed Monday, January 1, 2024. All services will resume Tuesday!

Some good tips for Halloween!
π Countdown to Halloween! ποΈπ»
Mark the date and get ready for a spooktacular Halloween celebration! π Let's make this holiday unforgettable for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by following these helpful tips:
1οΈβ£ Mark the Date: Use a calendar ποΈ to mark Halloween and count down the days to help your child prepare.
2οΈβ£ Talk About It: Engage in conversations about Halloween, discussing costumes, decorations, and the fun activities planned. Tell stories and watch family-friendly movies that show positive scenes of trick-or-treating and other Halloween activities.
3οΈβ£ Practice Makes Perfect: Have your child try on their costume and practice trick-or-treating at home or with friends and family. This allows children with ASD to become familiar with the process, from ringing doorbells to saying "trick or treat." Practicing in a safe environment boosts their confidence for the main event.
4οΈβ£ Prepare for New Sensory Experiences: Halloween introduces unique sensory experiences, such as costumes, decorations, and different textures. Gradually introduce these elements to your child, allowing them to adjust and become comfortable with new sensations. Bring headphones, ear plugs, a comfort item, a sensory toy or anything else that your child uses and have a plan for if your child needs a moment to regroup.
5οΈβ£ Explore New Traditions: Explore new Halloween traditions that align with your child's preferences and comfort level. Whether it's pumpkin carving, watching Halloween movies, or participating in a community event, find activities that bring joy and create lasting memories.
Remember, every child is unique, and these tips can be tailored to meet their individual needs. Let's make this Halloween a magical and inclusive experience, filled with excitement, laughter, and unforgettable moments! ππ»π¬

On this National Day of the Girl, let's shed light on the unique experiences of girls with autism. Autism in girls can sometimes present differently from the traditional stereotype of autistic behavior, which can lead to underdiagnosis.
- Internalizing Emotions - making it difficult for others to detect their emotional struggles.
- Social Camouflage - Masking or scripting, copying behaviors or words of peers
- Less obvious repetitive behavior - such as tapping fingers or playing with jewelry
- Special interests that align with what's considered "typical" for girls or more socially acceptable, such as books, animals, famous figures
This complex interplay can create a more subtle presentation of autism at times, potentially leading to missed diagnoses and/or misdiagnoses.
When girls with autism aren't recognized, they miss out on supports that can help them understand themselves and their challenges, help them build skills and learn new tools, and help them grow in comfort and confidence.
If you suspect your child might have autism, don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor for guidance. Seek a referral to a health specialist with expertise in autism for a comprehensive evaluation. Early diagnosis is a powerful tool that opens doors to tailored support, understanding, and the opportunity to thrive.
Every girl deserves the chance to reach her full potential.
