As we reach the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, we would like to use this opportunity to encourage you to take time for yourself. Remember to try to spend some time outside. 🌱

We recently learned that in Slovania, there is a time-honored tradition to use the sound of bees buzzing to relax. According to a BBC article, bee therapy acts as a way to alleviate stress or anxiety for everyone, from firefighters to children. These pictures were all taken by our founder Trini in her garden! 🐝

If you’ve had braces, you may be at risk for sleep disordered breathing. The way that our mouths move (jaw/lips/tongue) changes the form of our mouth by the way it applies pressure in certain areas. If our movements are less than ideal, our teeth get crowded and aren't perfectly aligned, but more importantly, so does our airway.

Think about this... what animal has crooked teeth? What does sleep disordered breathing looking like? It looks like anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, trouble staying on task at school, speech delays, impulsive behaviors.

We're happy to provide you with a free screening if you have any concerns.

Who is doing the thinking?
A prompt is defined as: “Instructions, gestures, demonstrations, touches, and/or things that we do to increase the likelihood that children will make correct responses” by Lynn McClannahan and Patricia Krantz of Princeton Child Development Institute.

➡️ A prompt is the therapist or adult doing the thinking! A cue is a hint that will force the patient or child do the thinking.

An example of a prompt for producing the /k/ sound would be: "Make sure your tongue tip is down and use the back of your tongue."
A cue for the same result would be: “Where's your tongue?

Children typically begin to develop the /I/ sound at around age three, and master it by age six. If your child is older than six and still has difficulty pronouncing the /I/ sound or consistently replaces it with the /w/ or /y/ sound, then it is strongly recommended that you seek the help of a licensed speech therapist for your child. Due to the nature of speech problems, they are often much more easily and effectively treated if they are caught early - in fact, the earlier, the better!

Here we are practicing the /l/ sound with a small audience, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head!

If your child is struggling with their speech but loves music, we can help! At Speech Solutions, we use the power of music to help give your child the very best chance to speak successfully and with ease. 🎶

Talk it Rock it (formerly known as Kids Express Train) is a tool we use to help enhance a child’s speech and language skills or build it for them from a young age.

Written by a speech-language pathologist, each song is packed with speech and language techniques and speech practice. Some of our favorites include the BMW song, the Hi song, or the Puppy song that includes words and phrases which help to start bilabial productions/interactions.

Why go to a Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM)? The IAOM is the only entity that currently is structured as a non-profit organization AND has a 3rd party credentialing process. Becoming certified under the IAOM requires a therapist to attend a course, submit two (2) case studies, a query, and to pass a written exam under the scrutiny of not just one examiner, but two. In addition, once you’re certified, you need to maintain your qualifications with continuing education units. You can feel confident that any COM will provide you and your loved ones with quality top notch therapy.

As the only COM in Hawaii, Speech Solutions will get you the results that your looking for -- contact us today!

What is the difference between "Speech" and "Language"? Speech is defined the sounds that our mouths make. Language is defined as the rules that govern those sounds. For example the sound /s/ makes a snake sound -- that's speech. But adding an /s/ to the end of "apple", makes them plural ("apples") -- that's language.

We provide Speech and Language education, therapy, and solutions for our clients. Not sure if your child was assessed appropriately for their speech and language? Call us today!

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is one of only two truly objective swallow study options available.

In the FEES process, we use a green dye mixed with a small variety of foods and drinks. The green dye provides us with a contrast color, which enables us to see through the FEES scope where the food/liquid is going as the patient swallows -- either the airway, stomach, pockets in our throat, etc. The dye also mixes in with your saliva to see if there’s a trace of saliva or food that doesn’t go down after the first swallow.

We are also able to test strategies to see what helps food to go down - and what doesn’t, ensuring higher visibility of the issues at hand, so that we can effectively treat the patient. If you are caring for a loved one or feel that you could benefit from FEES, contact us today for a consultation.

IAOM Convention

October 2nd is O2, or Global Airway Health Day! 🌬
Today we want to focus on promoting upper respiratory health, restorative breathing, and nurturing sleep.

Is your tongue resting at the top of your mouth right now? If not, use this post as a reminder to practice closed-mouth breathing with your tongue against the top of the mouth ✅
We also recommend checking out our other posts on Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) for more tips and information about the importance of healthy breathing.

Have a great Global Airway Health Day from Speech Solutions Hawaii! 🫧

The roof of the child’s mouth (upper palate) sits right underneath the airways coming in through the nose and leading down into the lungs. If the roof of the mouth gets squeezed, it will get pushed up into the nasal airways. When that happens airways get squeezed and it becomes more and more difficult to breathe through the nose.

Please see our other posts about sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and how we can help our children get restorative and nurturing sleep! ➡️

When the tongue does not rest against the roof of the mouth, the upper jaw can become squeezed together. Then, it not only raises the paar and constricts the nasal airways, it also squeezes the gums inward. This may not leave enough room for the adult teeth to emerge and can cause crooked teeth and a lisp.

A tongue thrust swallowing motion is not effective at opening the throat airway space and actually narrows it over time.

Here are some physical indicators and characteristics of SDB that we should watch for.

1️⃣ Snoring/Sleep Apnea: Snoring and especially sleep apnea (when breathing during sleep stops for 10 seconds or more), is an immediate cause for concern.
2️⃣ Crowded Upper Teeth: Crowded upper teeth could mean a narrowed upper palate is shrinking the airway in the nose and leaving little space for emerging adult teeth.
3️⃣ Stunted Chin: A stunted chin may mean that your child's jaw and tongue did not keep up with the overall facial growth and are now blocking the airway in the throat.
4️⃣ Dark circles: If your child's eyes look like they’ve been out all night, it may be because your child isn't getting good, restorative sleep.
5️⃣ Mouth Breathing/Eating: Does your child chew with closed lips but have to stop to breathe through their mouth?
6️⃣ Dry and Swollen Tonsils: A narrowed nasal airway means children breathe unfiltered, unwarmed and dry air through the mouth making the tonsils dry and irritated.
