SUSPECT IDENTIFIED AT SHERMAN OAKS POST OFFICE
Per your email below, please know that our office has been in contact with the Sherman Oaks Post Office, the US Postal Inspection Service, and the Office of Inspector General regarding the series of mail theft incidents that have been reported at the Sherman Oaks Post Office. The Post Office confirms that a suspect has been identified. Moreover, this individual had been employed at the Sherman Oaks Post Office and has subsequently been let go.

I am advised that the Office of Inspector General has an open case into the matter, but I am not yet aware of an arrest.

As the suspect has been identified as a postal employee or contractor, I’m advised that all incidents should be reported to the Office of Inspector General directly by calling 866-644-5696, selecting Option 2 (to make a “Hotline Complaint”), and then selecting Option 6 (to “report fraud involving a USPS program”). You should be connected with a representative who will include your incident in their investigation. If you have supporting documentation that you would also like to provide to the Office of Inspector General, you may send it as an attachment to [email protected].

The Post Office also advises that all incidents of mail theft be reported to the Office of Postal Inspection Services by calling 877-876-2455 and selecting Option 3. You should be connected with a representative who will file a report.

Lastly, I’m advised that any mail theft involving a loss totaling more than $1,000 constitutes a felony crime and should also be reported to local law enforcement by calling 877-275-5273 or filing a report online at the following link: https://www.lapdonline.org/file-a-police-report/

1. Mail and Deliveries: Heading out on a vacation? Make sure to have the post office or your mail carrier hold your mail. You don’t want a pile of letters shouting, “No one’s home!” Same goes for those online shopping splurges—pause the deliveries or ask a neighbor to grab them for you.

2. Neighborhood Watch Party: Before you go, chat with your neighbors and ask them to keep an eye on your place. They can alert you if something seems off and pick up any stray packages. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get to know them better!

3. Community Connection: Build a little neighborhood squad! Stay in touch with those around you so everyone knows what’s normal on your street. Familiar faces, usual cars, and even the routine barks from dogs can help everyone spot when something’s out of place.
