One HELL of a barter for CUSTOM FRAMING!

🖼️ Frame Dissection🔪
Basics to know about the difference of quality custom framing. For years I've advised customers on the importance of archival framing. Figure if you choose to frame something, there must be a reason and you may want it to last. However that does not mean you have to spend an arm and a leg.

*ACID-FREE MATTING*
The quickest way to identify acid-free matting. Would be to notice what color the bevel is. BEVEL❓ The bevel is that little delicate sloped edge that makes the cut out. If the bevel is tan or brownish it is acidic. Acid-free matting usually has a white bevel or sometimes colored/painted to act as multiple layers.

Big box store framing is aware of the damage that is caused by acidic mats (see photo 3). When framing with a corporation you'll pay much more. Beware local frame shops are the only ones that still sell acidic mats. Because it's cheap for a reason!

*"Glazing" AKA Glass*
In photo 2, you'll notice a dramatic difference in the mat color. What the color was, has been preserved under the "lip of the frame" (edge). UV protective glass is like sunglasses for framed art and comes in a variety of choices.

Basic glass only protects the surface of framed art/photos. Regardless if the frame sees actual sunlight, indoor lighting fades art/photos as well. While acidic mats fade naturally on their own.

*Mounts*
The way artwork/photos are held in place is just as important as the component materials. Any kind of tape will not do. Acidic tape such as the common scotch tape will stain and become brittle (photo 4).

There are a variety of acid-free adhesives and non adhesive methods to mount art/photos. Knowing how and when to use these materials takes skills. In photo 4, the correct adhesive was used incorrectly. How so❓ This application caused the artwork to buckle, instead of laying flat.

Objective: paint an original advertisement poster on illustration board. This was created for a summer class and time was limited. I intended to add a lot of architectural detail. However hand painting the metallic lettering took serious time. Maybe one day I'll add more to this poster...& make prints?🤔
