APFA Celebrates Independence Day, Happy 4th of July!
On July 2, 1994, a flight from Columbia, SC, crashed near Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in an intense thunderstorm. Twenty passengers, including the 3 Flight Attendants and 2 Pilots, successfully evacuated the aircraft. Of the 57 passengers on board, 37 died in the crash. Today, we remember those who lost their lives on that fateful evening.
APFA honors the bravery and courage the entire crew displayed that evening. We especially commend Flight Attendants Richard DeMary, Shelley Markwith, and Karen Forcht for their heroism that evening.
Thank you for supporting us in our fight for a contract!
Thank you Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l for your support.
While American Airlines executives gave themselves raises and bonuses up to 60% of their salary, their flight attendants have been without a pay raise for over five years. New-hire Flight Attendants at American Airlines are guaranteed a salary of just $27,000 annually, while CEO Robert Isom’s compensation package totaled $31.4 million in 2023.

It is with pride that we show our solidarity to our sister and brothers from the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) in their struggle and in their fight for a just contract after going without a raise for the past 5 years! There’s no reason why in 2024 America flight attendants at American Airlines only get a guaranteed salary of $27,000 a year, while the company’s CEO gets a compensation package of over $31 million dollars.

Thirty-nine years ago, Trans World Airlines Flight 847 was hijacked after takeoff from Athens, Greece, with 139 passengers and eight crew members on board. The flight, scheduled to land at Rome, Italy, was diverted to Beirut, Lebanon, where nineteen passengers were released in exchange for fuel. The hijackers flew the plane, crew, and remaining passengers between Beirut and Algiers, Algeria over the next few days as the ordeal continued.
The crew of TWA 847 are widely credited with saving the lives of many passengers, using their excellent training as well as language skills to communicate with and calm the hijackers. Today, we honor TWA Purser Uli Derickson, Flight Attendants Judy Cox, Hazel Hesp, Elizabeth Howes, and Helen Sheahan, Captain John Testrake, First Officer Philip Maresca, and Flight Engineer Benjamin Zimmerman. We remember U.S. Navy Diver and TWA 847 passenger Robert Stethem, who was shot and killed during the standoff.
32 U.S. Senators Urge NMB to Resolve Prolonged Contract Negotiations
Sen. Sanders and 31 Senators Call on National Mediation Board to End Delays and Allow Airline Workers to Strike If Agreements Can’t Be Reached

Today, 32 U.S. Senators wrote to the National Mediation Board (NMB) urging them to use all provisions of the Railway Labor Act to resolve prolonged contract negotiations. APFA members answered the Call to Action by writing and calling their Senators, urging them to stand up for their rights as Union members. Thank you to APFA activists and constituents for rising to the occasion and thank you to our Union siblings at AFA-CWA for collaborating to send this strong message to the NMB
APFA National President Julie Hedrick thanked the Senators for supporting our industry-wide fight:
“Contract negotiations must have reasonable deadlines in order for both parties to be motivated to reach an agreement. APFA thanks Senator Bernie Sanders for leading this letter to the National Mediation Board that says exactly that. It’s been five years since APFA members worked under an updated contract and our members are not able to wait any longer. Thank you to the 32 Senators who joined in backing this message in support of improving wages and working conditions for hardworking Flight Attendants.” -Julie Hedrick, National President, Association of Professional Flight Attendants, representing 28,000 American Airlines Flight Attendants
Chair Bernie Sanders and 31 Senators sent a clear message on delayed contract negotiations:
“We are concerned about the increasing number of contract negotiations before the NMB that are being unnecessarily drawn out at the expense of workers,” wrote the Senators. “We understand that there are ongoing negotiations that have dragged on for as long as five years and we have heard from workers who are rightfully frustrated that they are being subjected to unfair delays in bargaining. Without new contracts, these workers are left further and further behind…” Full hotline in post.

Will American Airlines flight attendants strike? If so, when? What travelers should know. Traveling soon? As flight attendants seek to renegotiate contracts for higher wages, here’s what you need to know about what comes next.
