Adirondack Paintings by Sandra Hildreth
Original oil and watercolor paintings of the Adirondack Mountains and the American west. Open by appointment. 518-832-0081 Commissions welcome.
I live in Saranac Lake, NY, and I do original oil and watercolor paintings of the Adirondack Mountains and the American West. My home studio is open by appointment only, but my work is always on display in the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery in Saranac Lake. I work both in my studio and outdoors, 'en plein air'. See more at http://sandrahildreth.com/
NOT TODAY - but my studio will be open this weekend. 10 - 1 on Sat. (have to leave for an exhibit reception at the Birds of a Feather Gallery & Studio in Chestertown) and 10 - 4 on Sunday. If you want to come see some of my newest paintings, stop in! Have plenty of older ones as well. This is an ArtWorks Studio Tours weekend!
Here’s the cool, hand-crafted wood magnet I picked up at Grandpappys Adirondack Barn in Wilmington and the 16x20 painting I worked on. Just have to do the sky.
Here’s was my display wall at the Keeseville Plein Air Festival. I went to retrieve my paintings today and the 2 in gold frames have found their way to new homes! If you happen to be one of the buyers, I’d love to know I’d like to give you a proper thank you!
Finished up at Poke -o-Moonshine! Off to the reception for the Keeseville Plein Air Festival this evening.
Paintings 5 and 6! Then off to Keene Valley for reception!
Thursday July 18 - reception at the Corscaden Barn Gallery! 4:30 - 7. See this painting, and more....
Painting #4 for the Keeseville Plein Air Festival. I was in an open pasture looking down on Mace Chasm Farm, the sunset and Whiteface Mountain to the west. To actually see my paintings, come to the reception Friday evening in the Old Stone Mill next the bridge in Keeseville.
Painting at the Lavender Farm outside of Keeseville. It was scenic and smelled really good!
Keeseville Plein Air Festival painting #2 for the day - packed up and headed home when the raindrops started. I was at Asgaard Farm, the home of artist Rockwell Kent. I basically have the sky to finish (that's my toned canvas showing through) - loved the pinkish color that developed as the thunderstorms were forming over the mountains.
Found a cool, breezy place to paint, in the shade, alongside the Ausable River as it approaches Keeseville. On Dugway Rd.
Busy week! The Keeseville Plein Air event starts tomorrow, 7/16,and the the Corscaden Barn Gallery exhibit opens 7/18. Keeseville reception & exhibit 7/19-20. Here’s a painting I did last year for Keeseville, along the road to Augur Lake. A hot, humid day in the Adirondacks. It sold too!
NEW Reception date : the “Shoot the Moon” Exhibit will now open at the Corscaden Barn Gallery, in Keene Valley, Thursday July 18 from 4:30 to 7. See this painting and more.
EHIBIT OPENING POSTPONED! This is NOT a painting of the Ausable River - but this painting resembled what the Ausable looked like this morning - and it's why the opening reception at the Corscaden Barn Gallery had to be postponed. Watch for an announcement about a new date.
I've been so busy, this has snuck up on me - I have 12 paintings in this wonderful show in Keene Valley! Reception is THIS Thursday, from 4:30 - 7. Stop in! Martha always curates excellent exhibits!
Here are the 2 paintings I submitted to the Hanmer Guideboat Races art exhibit. The show is on display through Sunday, along with an exhibit of beautiful, hand-built guide boats in the ballroom of the Hotel Saranac. Hours are noon - 8 pm.
Wild orchids! Real ones and painted ones at the Paul Smith's College VIC. Celebrate our Adirondack flora and fauna with me today at my exhibit reception, June 30, from 3 - 5. The wild orchids are in bloom on the Boreal Life Trail too.

While I have an exhibit reception at the VIC on June 30, I’m loading up this brand new painting, and about a dozen more, for a group show in Keene Valley. It will be at the Corscaden Barn Gallery. It will open July 11, 4:30-7 and be up through Labor Day. And I forgot Facebook and Instagram don’t like panoramic images - so both ends of the painting have been cropped! Come to Keene Valley to see the whole painting.
June 30 is the Reception for my exhibit at the Paul Smith's College VIC, "Observations". It will be from 3 - 5 and perfect timing for a hike or visit to the Butterfly House before or after the reception.
I have been painting at the VIC for over 20 years, observing the landscape as it changes with time, the seasons, and even the daily weather conditions. To study a place intimately, discovering the little things that make it unique, is a valuable personal mission. Everyone should find their own "Walden Pond" and make nature a daily part of their life.
More of my paintings can be seen at the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery in Saranac Lake.
Asgaard Farm - I spent the day working this panoramic view. Channeling Rockwell Kent - I bet if I look in the book I have about him that i might find a painting of the same view. I did have to move as my viewpoint transitioned into full sun by about 2 pm. All I had left was the sky, so I moved down to the shade of the woods where Kent’s studio is located. All in all, a good day!
Started a panoramic Mountain View late in the afternoon. While the sunlight and clearing skies were welcome, the cloud shadows moving across the contours of the High Peaks became the new challenge. This will require a 2nd visit, or more, to complete.
Went to Heaven Hill Farm today, but for the majority of the time, the mountains were shrouded in clouds, so I chose to paint a limited view, adding the summits when they finally became visible.
Spent most of today along the St Regis River.
I see I need to remember that Facebook won’t accept different size images in a single post, and crops them to the same size
Another day of rain and cool temps - but no bugs! Painted at Black Pond in the afternoon. Unable to finish morning painting - sooo much green! The orange background is my toned canvas.
Heron Marsh - afternoon painting, in between thunder and rain showers. Tried to capture the stormy sky and the multitude of different greens.
Painting at the Paul Smiths VIC today, part of the week long Publishers Invitational Adirondack Paint week.
Newly finished paintings - ready to be framed. Both of these plein air paintings will be on my wall at the Adirondack Artists Guild in Saranac Lake, beginning Tuesday June 4.
Hung 33 paintings in the Heron Marsh Gallery at the Paul Smith’s CollegeVIC today. All oils. Most painted at the VIC. Reception June 30, from 3-5.
A tale of two paintings - I ambitiously started the 20x16 canvas on the right on a warm day in February. Never got around to finishing it and wasn't terribly excited about working on it. Fast forward to May 24. A perfect Adirondack day, though a bit windy. I had other things to work on during the day, but at 6 pm I decided to grab that February canvas and go back to see what McKenzie Mountain looked like. (Access in from the new Rail Trail). I got a lot of it repainted (on the left), with some minor corrections as well. The bottom 1/2 is still the frozen pond from February - I'll have to go back another day - hopefully not waiting another 4 months! I did get back - almost done!
Had a great time on May 19 painting near the top of Whiteface Mountain with Nancy and Leigh Ann! As always, still some work to be done on the painting, but fun to capture the various new greens coming out with spring weather. And of course the black flies joined us too.
