“Hearing Loss Breakthrough
An 11-year-old boy with congenital hearing loss is able to hear for the first time thanks to an experimental gene therapy treatment, according to initial results released yesterday.

Aissam Dam was born with hearing loss caused by a mutated single gene known as otoferlin, which affects roughly 200,000 people globally. Otoferlin is a protein in the inner ear's hair cells that allows for sound to be transmitted to the brain. Dam became the first patient in the US to undergo a surgical procedure at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in October, in which doctors replaced the mutated otoferlin gene in Dam's ears with a functional gene. The gene therapy trial showed Dam's hearing was restored within 30 days of the procedure, reducing his hearing loss severity from total to mild (see chart).”

Horses have an incredible ability to interpret human emotions. In 2019, psychologists demonstrated that horses could recognize a human's mood from their facial expressions and differentiate between anger and happiness. Without training the horses, the psychologists showed 28 horses several pictures of unfamiliar faces, either angry or smiling. Then, they had the people from the images meet the horses, wearing neutral expressions.

In each case, the horses responded negatively to the people presented as angry and positively to those shown as happy. The findings show that horses can recognize and react to how people present themselves emotionally and respond accordingly.

When incorporated into mental health and personal growth services, horses can make real and positive impacts on our mental health and personal growth journeys due to their ability to recognize and react to human emotions, and help us look at ourselves in a new light.

“Budd Coates, an established running coach and Olympic Trials qualifier, developed a popular breathing technique and wrote a well known article explaining it. This technique trains runners to breath in odd “counts”. Coates recommends a 3-2 counting pattern- inhale for a count of three then exhale for a count of two, and when sprinting or running at a faster pace to run at a 2-1 counting pattern. Most people do not have rhythmic breathing when they run or use an even pattern.

Coates followed a study by Dennis Bramble and David Carrier, of the University of Utah, that found when exhalation always falls on the same foot, there is a higher chance of injury because it puts constant stress on that side of the body.”

The Brown County Jail recently partnered with UW-Madison Extension to connect children and their incarcerated parent/caregiver through a literacy-rich experience. This group of inmates was the first to participate in a program called Making Reading Memories. Each participant was required to take a workshop where they learned the benefits of reading to their children, learned tips on how to make reading fun and how to connect with their children through books they love. Once they completed the workshop, they were able to choose a book to read to their child which was videotaped. Jail administration was able to review the videotaping and if it was approved (all of them were) a copy of the book and link to the video was sent to the child. Funding for the books and mailings was provided by a grant from UW-Madison. The inmates gave positive reviews of this program but even more importantly was the excitement of the children.
