Meet Robin Hodges, an Empire State University alumna. She is the Chief Operations and Impact Officer for the African American Veterans Monument located at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park in Buffalo, NY. Learn about what Memorial Day means to her.

"Memorial Day is special to me because it honors and remembers those who sacrificed their lives for our country. It is a day to reflect on the bravery and dedication of fallen service members and recognize the ultimate price they paid for our freedom.

Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend. It is a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice of our military heroes. As someone deeply involved in honoring fallen service members through the African American Veterans Monument, I understand the significance of this day. It is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of African American veterans, who have often been overlooked in history.

My work on the African American Veterans Monument is a testament to my commitment to ensuring that these brave men and women are remembered and honored appropriately. Their stories of valor and dedication deserve to be told and preserved for future generations. Memorial Day is a time to pay tribute to all veterans and to renew our commitment to preserving their legacy.

Memorial Day is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our service members. It is a day of gratitude, reflection, and a renewed dedication to honoring those who gave their lives for our country, ensuring their memory lives through our efforts, memorials, and monuments like the African American Veterans Monument."

Bold New Beginnings.

In 1886, the Statue of Liberty first shined its torch on New York Harbor, lighting the way toward a better life, prosperity, and opportunity. Eighty-five years later, SUNY Empire State College opened its doors, providing a pathway for students to realize the American Dream through affordable, accessible education.

Since then, SUNY Empire has led the way in personalized, innovative higher education—from mentoring and adult education to credit for life experience and online learning. Today, we are proud to be New York state’s online college, continually innovating and driving thought and process in this dynamic academic arena.

Although society and technologies have changed over the years, our steadfast commitment to the needs of our students has not. SUNY Empire is a place where the American Dream is alive and well, where students achieve success through hard work, and where opportunity abounds.

We are pleased to share with you our new brand look, which embraces the torch—a universal symbol of hope and leadership. Its light reflects our bold beginning, bright future, and continual dedication to providing a college experience that empowers students to achieve their academic and career goals.
