The Brother Boys / On The H***y Tonk Highway With The Brother Boys – 2CD-Review | RockTimes 02/11/2023

https://www.rocktimes.info/the-brother-boys-on-the-honky-tonk-highway-with-the-brother-boys-2cd-review/

In 1986, Ed Snodderly and Eugene Wolf founded the band The Brother Boys and to this day, with many changing co-musicians over the decades, the two of them are the only constant musicians in the group. The girl from eastern Tennessee never made her big breakthrough, even if she had a few more successful albums on the Sugar Hill label. But what perhaps doesn't come as a complete surprise if you listen to the first tracks of this chronologically structured compilation. It becomes clear very quickly that The Brother Boys, at least at the beginning, approached their songs in a very traditional and puristic way, so much so that the listener undoubtedly thinks they find themselves somewhere in the Apalachians in the 1950s or 1960s. Sparse guitars and the - by the way, very harmonious - vocals are clearly in the foreground, while bass, drums and other instruments can be seen in the background rather neglected. The two main protagonists have almost nothing to do with rock'n'roll or rock music; rather, they throw themselves with all their fervor into the sound of a long-gone decade and feeling that today - especially outside of the USA - Due to general evolution, it can hardly be felt in normal everyday life. For fans and sympathizers of the band, what's really great about this double CD is that it contains almost all of the tracks from the debut album, which, according to the promoter, is now very difficult to obtain. And when we got to song number eight, even the reviewer rubbed his eyes and ears in amazement when suddenly a cover version of the Tom Waits song "Tango Till They're Sore" (from the Waits album "Rain Dogs") came out of the speakers. , 1985). Of course, the number sounds significantly different with the Brother Boys than in the original, but here too you can see that a good song is just a good song, if it is played in different styles it is still good. So you first have to get into this music and there's nothing for hardcore rockers here anyway, but interestingly enough, at least the reviewer feels that - the longer the two silver pieces rotate in the system to the brim - the feeling of well-being becomes keeps rising. Having arrived at this point, it must of course also be noted that there is already a whole lot of musical and vocal ability at the start. On the second CD, which contains recordings from the mid-1990s, bluegrass music becomes much more dominant. The banjo comes more to the fore and the songs are snappier and faster, which suits my taste even more. To loosen things up, live recordings were occasionally included in between to raise the mood level a little further. The latest recordings are from September 2021 and conclude the thirty years of band history spread across this double-decker. As already mentioned above, the Brother Boys' music is not necessarily for every music fan and even open-minded friends of the fine arts have to listen a little first. However, it works very well and the reviewer has now used the two discs much more often than he would have initially expected. You just have to get involved with these 'brothers' a bit in order to be 'rewarded'. As you would expect from Bear Family Records, there is also a detailed booklet for this CD edition with all the data and facts you need to know. As always, exemplary.

Brother Boys : On The H***y Tonk Highway With The Brother Boys (CD) Mighty nice work from The Brother Boys – a contemporary group, but one who've got a sound that's very steeped in older folk and country styles – all at a level that makes them a perfect group to focus on in this excellent series!
