SPC OUTLOOK
LIGHTNING RISK FOR SATURDAY
A lingering backdoor front will maintain cloudy conditions with scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout this evening. As high pressure moves in from the north, the area will experience cooler, drier weather over the weekend. The likelihood of thunderstorms will rise early next week with the approach of another front.
Key Messages:
1) The stalled front may lead to isolated showers and storms this evening.
2) High pressure will result in drier weather and clearer skies tomorrow.
Currently, a weak front lies along the Virginia/North Carolina border, with surface flow predominantly from the east/northeast above the front. The combination of afternoon heating and remaining boundary layer moisture has already triggered a few showers. Intensified heating and greater convergence along the boundary are expected to increase activity over the coming hours, with the highest confidence for rain and storms in the northwest North Carolina mountains, extending into southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia. Rain and storm intensity is expected to wane this evening as the heat dissipates.
The skies will clear progressively overnight as the high pressure from the Great Lakes strengthens its hold on the region. Fog is likely to form after midnight, particularly in mountainous areas and river valleys.
Saturday will see improved conditions under the stronger influence of high pressure, with drier weather and mostly sunny skies. An isolated mountain shower might occur in the North Carolina mountains due to lingering easterly flow, but it is highly probable that the majority of the region will stay dry.
Weather History for July 27:
1926 - A hurricane made landfall near Daytona Beach, FL, causing $2.5 million in damages across eastern Florida, including the Jacksonville area. (David Ludlum)
1939 - Lewiston, ID, recorded a temperature of 117 degrees, setting an all-time high for the location. (The Weather Channel)
1943 - Lieutenant Ralph O'Hair and Colonel Duckworth, on a spontaneous decision and piloting a single-engine AT-6, became the first to fly into a hurricane, initiating regular Air Force reconnaissance flights into such storms. (The Weather Channel)
1987 - Thunderstorms in Minnesota generated a tornado that traveled southwest for thirty miles through Rice County and Goodhue County, uprooting trees and tossing them around, and even carrying a horse through the air. La Crosse, WI, received 5.26 inches of rain, marking their second-highest 24-hour total on record. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)
1988 - Intense heat affected the north central U.S., with Williston, ND, reporting a record high of 108 degrees. Severe thunderstorms struck the eastern U.S. and southeastern Texas, while Richland County, SC, endured up to 5.5 inches of rain. (The National Weather Summary)
1989 - Thunderstorms in the southwestern U.S. brought heavy rains, with Yuma, AZ, enduring its most severe thunderstorm on record. Winds, unofficially gusting up to 95 mph, reduced visibility to near zero due to dust and sand. Yuma received almost a year's worth of rain in one hour, with a record 24-hour total of 2.55 inches for July, causing millions in property damage from flash flooding and high winds. (Storm Data)
