Thank you to all our surveyors and for all you do for Utah.

The annual 2024 UCLS Conference is in the books. It was a great time gathering continuing education, networking, and talking shop! We'll see you all again next year!

22/02/2024

We are having a great time of our annual conference, but are looking forward to hanging out at the next month during surveyors week.

24/01/2024

We are about a month out from our annual conference. And with that goes our renewed efforts to raise money and awareness for the Walter M. Cunningham Education Foundation. Money raised during the conference goes directly to scholarships, education and outreach in Utah Schools.

If you plan on attending, get permission from your spouse to spend a little extra to give back. If you know any local businesses reach out for a donation. Or visit WMCEF.org to donate directly. We can provide our non-profit paperwork as well.

Towards the end of 2023 our Historical Committee and partnered to place a survey marker and start an exhibit about surveying and the early settlers in Utah.

What a great opportunity to talk more about surveying and its impact on our world. Next time you are in the area, stop by and visit the monument and spend some time at the park learning about life as a pioneer in early Utah.

We have a lot more coming in 2024. Keep a eye out for more partnerships and opportunities.

Today is giving Tuesday. Please consider a donation to the Walter M. Cunningham Education Foundation.

Money donated goes directly to scholarships, outreach and recruitment of K to 12 students into the survey profession. Donations support our training of the future generations that will care for our legacies.

Now more than ever, we need surveyors, not just because our numbers are dwindling, but because of the important work we do to safeguard and protect property boundaries and measure the earth.

Donate at wmcef.org.

Giving Thanks for you all, for our careers, our surveying history and the family and friends we get to share it with.

Hoping you get to enjoy a day of peace and food with those you love.

This training is for all field personnel, aspiring surveyors or anyone wanting to brush up on their techniques. I’m the past we have specifically focused on the NSPS CST exams and prep. This year we are still focused on preparing for the exams, but have picked topics and speakers that we believe will set this apart from our previous training and be of benefit to both the future surveyor, but field crews/construction surveyors that may not be on the PLS track.

Our next scholarship recipient this year was Sierra Holz. Here is a little about her:

I got my Bachelor degree of Geography at the U of U. It was a good fit since I love travelling, being outdoors, learning, and experiencing foreign cultures and landscapes. I especially love studying maps, learning of places and names, and scrutinizing the visual aesthetics and composition. During college I spent summers travelling to different countries and once graduated, took various jobs that offered experiences to live and work in different parts of the west, from southern UT to AK. After moving back to Utah, I took a soul-crushing job that forced me to make a change. I passed the GRE; then while deciding what do for graduate school, I thought I’d take a class at SLCC. I read about the Geomatics program and ended up in Walt’s office and he was so encouraging that he talked me into getting the Land Surveying degree. I signed up for classes that fall, happily quit my job, and went back to school. I got my first job with the BLM, and have been working in the profession ever since, now with Meridian Engineering. Life got busy and I became a mother during the pandemic, and then life got even busier. I still hadn’t finished the AAS degree at SLCC, and upon hearing of Walt’s passing, I took that as a sign that I needed to get it done, and the decision was finalized once I heard the SLCC program was ending. So, I am very grateful for the WMCEF scholarship to help me finish school and graduate with the AAS degree in Geomatics.

As we do each summer, and because of your support the Utah Council of Land Surveyors with the Walter M. Cunningham Education Foundation once again gave out scholarships to students in Utah working towards a career in surveying. Our first recipient was Jakob Harris, here is a little bit about him:

I stumbled upon this profession, as one might stumble upon a lucky penny. I wasn’t looking to be a surveyor nor had I known what one was, however, it has been a stupendous career change. I had gone from working in the medical field to going back to school to become a Land surveyor. The Land Surveying program at Utah Valley University created a competitive academic platform to prepare me to become a licensed land surveyor. Some of my favorite opportunities the program has offered were; the NSPS student competition in Washington DC, involvement with UCLS, the law classes, history class, and the critical application classes.

In the spring of 2023 my senior project was to put together an event for girl scouts of Utah to experience a STEM activity from the field of Surveying. This event had turned out to be a great success for the girl scouts and their families. This fall semester will be my last semester at Utah Valley University. I’m excited to graduate and soon become a licensed professional. Soon to be a professional Land Surveyor, I plan to continue to promote the Land surveying profession to the next generation.
