I get to brush off my throwing arm and flex my river rescue again some this Fall. Here are some good opportunities. Particularly the Sept session.

Ever get to the end of a swr traditional 2 day course and wonder what comes next? Did you love learning live bait but didn’t get to practice it enough or apply it in different scenarios . Hop on the water with Jordan (and me) Sept 14-15 to dive deeper to explore a wider range of techniques that we don’t normally get to train.

Action-packed and heart-thumping, Kayak Cross makes its Olympic debut in Paris 02/08/2024

More medals ???

Action-packed and heart-thumping, Kayak Cross makes its Olympic debut in Paris Kayak Cross, formerly known as Extreme Slalom, is mayhem. Kayakers bombard down strong currents, knocking other athletes out of the way while swerving around padded buoys hanging from above.

A rather great opportunity !!!

It arrived !! The Astral Indus!

Check it out when I’m teaching here Potomac River Outfitters and for Calleva's River School. And later this summer at Sundance Kayak School!!

I’ll post some more useful information on the jacket once I’ve taught in it for a little bit.

It def has more foam around the sides. Is just as comfortable as a green jacket if not more. Has a short proper trim of the rescue belt and a cool pocket SWR guide written by my friend Justin Landmark Learning which is super cool to have !

This is a students roll from the pool session this past weekend . It didn’t start like this, but midway through our session it really began to click.
A good roll is 1. Effortless, 2. Repeatable, 3. Doesn’t hurt you, 4. Uses large muscle groups, 5. Finishes in balance and ready to paddle

If it’s missing some of that list, let’s work on it this season . Contact me here to set up a session or request me at Calleva's River School.

Extreme kayaking on North Carolina's Green Narrows draws thousands of spectators 07/11/2022

The Green Race made the news on NPR. It’s awesome they are finally letting the whitewater stories make it past the editors and on the air !

Extreme kayaking on North Carolina's Green Narrows draws thousands of spectators The only way to watch the Green Race kayak race in person is to hike down a two-mile steep ravine - a trek so strenuous that it parallels the vertical waterfalls the kayakers embark in.

Our Story

Beware, learning to kayak can be potentially life changing, in the most incredible ways.

Join our small custom classes and trips on the Potomac River and many surrounding rivers. Our small hand picked team of instructors will get to know you and your goals and help you create the best experience possible. Our approach is to design lessons and trips that maximize learning, not profit. We have the smallest class sizes in the industry, this is by design. Our small sizes allow us to make on the spot adjustments in our lessons and be as nimble in our teaching techniques as you will become in your kayaks. Our focus is student learning centric, we steer away from a cookie-cutter, massed produced approach to paddling instruction. Although lesson experiences can be similar, no one is exactly the same, the end results usually are. That result being; well rounded, informed, empowered, and proficient paddlers.

Some of our course offerings are:

- Beginner - intermediate whitewater kayak lessons
- River Rescue Courses beginner through advanced
- Staff training for kayak schools, rafting companies, summer camps, retail stores, and County/City Recreation Programs, college outing clubs
- Kayak Vacations both domestically and abroad to destinations like our hometown of Asheville, NC, California, the Rogue River, and Patagonia
- Weekend kayak trips and overnight lessons just outside of DC

In addition to our focus of whitewater kayaking, we provide ACA certification courses, wilderness medicine, instruction in sea kayak and canoe. We provide instruction and training to various organizations, including, Outward Bound, NOLS, Georgetown University, City Kids Wilderness Project, City of Alexandria, and Team RiverRunner.

Let us know how we can help you create your ideal kayak adventure!
