We are happy to be celebrating the opening of the new Norman Behavioral Health Center for adults today! It's on the Porter campus at Porter Health Village, 506 Wellness Way.
The 48-bed center will more than double Norman Regional’s current inpatient capacity for behavioral health patients. This project has been in the works for 2 years and is opening to better serve Norman!

Remember Assisted Living when donating! Think about donating to these communities instead of a typical donation center. Items like puzzles, board games, light exercise equipment, any entertainment or recreation items would be welcomed and utilized at nearly any community.
And for lower-income communities, there is probably a need for personal items like soaps, lotion, shampoos, socks, blankets and more. These would be of great value to some residents who go without.
Some people don't think 'donation' when they think assisted living, let's change that! You can make a meaningful contribution and improve someone's quality of life.

Are you ready for the solar eclipse? Please wear protective lenses! It's an event we won't see again for decades. Enjoy the rare celestial event however it suits you. There is a watch party on the Devon Lawn dowtown from noon to 2pm.

We know this is true! Unpaid caregivers-family members, friends, neighbors all add to the staggering numbers of hours caring for others. It can be thankless but the amount of care and love shown is also staggering and a price cannot be put on that. Thank you to ALL the caregivers in our state!

In honor of , we recognize prolific actor Samuel L. Jackson, who raises the bar both onscreen and off. As a dedicated, longtime Celebrity Champion, he fights to end Alzheimer’s on behalf of his entire family.

Why do people with dementia repeat themselves? How can you best respond?
In addition to short-term memory loss, a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia is often unsure of what’s happening, where they are, or what time or day it is.

The best ways to respond to are:
• Respond to the emotions rather than to the words. When your older adult starts to repeat something over and over, try to guess what feelings might be causing the behavior. For example, if they feel anxious, giving a brief hug or hand squeeze while calmly responding may soothe them enough to stop their need to keep saying it.

• Keep your answers brief. Keeping your response as short and simple as possible tends to work best.

• Distract with an activity Sometimes the only way to get someone with dementia to stop the repetitive questioning is to distract them with something they enjoy.

And for your own well-being, do a quick calming exercise, or go get a breath of fresh air when you have a moment.

Audio books area a great way for older adults with vision impairment to still enjoy books! There are many ways to set them up for easy listening.

Free Audio Books for Blind or Disabled Seniors – DailyCaring Blind, vision impaired, or physically disabled seniors can read independently with a free service that provides free audio books and braille books.
