Some Humor here, But I have to say I am grateful we don't have to deal with these.
-Asian giant hornet (AGH) is an invasive wasp that was detected in northwest Washington and British Columbia, Canada in fall 2019 and spring 2020; however, it is not known to be established in those regions. It has not been detected in Utah.
-AGH is native to parts of Asia where it is common in temperate and subtropical lowland forests.
-AGH is the world’s largest species of hornet, with a length up to 2 inches and a wingspan of 3 inches.
AGH is a social insect that constructs large nests that are typically located underground.

Todays fun, is some fun facts of pests :

-In a study, Termites ate through wood two times faster when listening to rock music.
-Male fruit flies sing and dance to attract females.
-Researchers believe that bed bug populations spread so quickly because the females are constantly moving to get as far away from males as possible.
-During studies in which mice were exposed to the music of heavy metal band Anthrax, these mice killed each other.
-A cockroach can live over a week without its head. The roach only dies because without a mouth, it can’t drink water and dies of thirst.
-Mosquitoes have killed more humans than all wars in history.
-Rats contaminate and destroy enough food worldwide each year to feed 200 million people.
-Crickets hear through their knees.
-Cockroaches can run up to three miles in an hour.
-When the only queen ant or termite dies, so does the entire colony because no new workers are born.
-Houseflies can taste with their feet — they have taste buds on them.
To survive the cold of winter months, many insects replace their body water with a chemical called glycerol, which acts as an antifreeze against the temperatures.
For every human there are about 1 million ants.
-Bed bugs can live for several months without a blood meal. This means they can linger in furniture for a long time until they are near a human host again.
-All insects on Earth would outweigh all animals if put on a scale.
-When honeybee queens are dying, they emit a pheromone that makes them smell like a stranger bee, so all the workers in the colony form a ball and kill her

Did you know Utah does have cockroaches?
American cockroaches

-reddish brown with a lighter border around the head
-largest species commonly found in Utah; up to 2 inches long
-immatures: smaller than adults; coloration variable; no wings
-may transmit disease pathogens
-cause allergic reactions, similar to asthma, in some people
-can be an asthma trigger
-Continually monitor for roaches in pest vulnerable areas, especially kitchens, boiler rooms, custodial closets, etc. using sticky trap monitors.
-Educate occupants of building or room(s) of their role in eliminating roaches.
-Dispose of trash regularly to remove food/shelter sources.
-Store food in pest-proof containers.
-Repair any leaks or plumbing malfunctions because cockroaches are attracted to damp environments.
-Caulk, install weather stripping or replace door sweeps where cockroaches can potentially enter buildings.
-Use roach baits and/or boric acid dust.
-Vacuum (with ah HEPA filter) roaches and egg cases.

Beetles on Vegetables – IPM Pest Advisories 02/08/2024

Beetles are insects belonging to the order Coleoptera, which encompasses several different families and species. Some of these beetles are currently active and can pose a significant threat to Utah’s vegetable production. These voracious feeders can cause extensive damage to crops, leading to reduced yields and compromised plant health. As beetle populations continue to proliferate in the landscape, farmers and gardeners must implement effective monitoring and control strategies to mitigate their impact.

Been seeing a lot of posts about working on getting rid of wasps.
Here are some tips to help.
Of course call us and setup an appointment.

Install tight-fitting screens in windows.
Never plug entrance holes to nests!
Use a wet-vac to vacuum yellowjackets, then dig up nest. This technique can be dangerous if not done properly. Research the proper technique and always wear protective gear. Do not attempt while people are present.
Apply a non-repellent insecticidal dust in and immediately around entrance hole(s) at night.
Consider outsourcing yellowjacket management.

Tomorrow is the 4th of July and all of us will be outside a lot which means these are going to be the main pests you will deal with.

Yellowjackets love any sugary or high-carb foods that are included on your cookout menu or in your picnic basket

Mosquitoes – Adult mosquitoes are active from dusk to dawn in search of a tasty blood meal. A Fourth of July fireworks display with plenty of unsuspecting victims is like a mosquito buffet. To get a jumpstart with your backyard mosquito control, remove any standing water in your backyard

Ants – Ants have a sweet tooth and will gladly feed on many of the foods we enjoy on the Fourth of July. Anything including oil, protein, sugar, or fat is fair game. If not cautious, you’ll quickly have hundreds of tiny ants invading your party.

Fig Wasps 03/07/2024

So it turns out that there is a species of wasp that isn’t out to kill us.

Fun fact Tuesday.

Fig Wasps Pollinators are responsible for assisting over 80% of the world's flowering plants to reproduce including animals that assist plants with their reproduction, as well as wind and water.

In Utah's vegetable gardens and small farms, pests like earwigs, flea beetles, thrips, and leafminers are currently active. These pests damage plants by chewing on leaves and fruits, creating holes, distorting growth, and tunneling through the foliage. Learning to identify and manage these pests sustainably is essential for maintaining healthy crops.
