As a transplant from Pennsylvania to southeastern Virginia, I’ll never get used to things like this no matter how long I live here 🤷🏼‍♀️ Sometimes we have 70 degree days in December! 🍦Also when did the ice cream truck DOUBLE it’s prices 😳 The kids used money from their piggy banks for this unplanned treat but I had to go inside and get more to supplement… $3.75 for a single ice cream bar?! Ours still ask to get one or know certain times are okay (like right after school) but it's been so helpful for us! I love making memories but I don’t love spending a ton of time or money to do it. 👻 These spooky pancakes took me about 30 seconds each this morning (it’s just whipped cream and 3 chocolate chips) and brought so much conversation and laughter to our breakfast table! My son said they were so spooky that he couldn’t believe it! 😆 P.S. if you’re like me and prefer to make homemade pancakes, I highly recommend making a pile of extra ones, stack them in between small pieces of waxed and freeze them! Just a normal day as a teacher… but that right there is the problem. Being screamed at, cursed at, told you should d1e, and having objects thrown at you SHOULDN’T be normal. ————- Every year I see more really amazing educators leaving… and as someone whose own children are just now entering the system, this is extra hard to watch. 😞 It’s not just an education issue (although the system in our country is greatly flawed). This is also a parenting issue. A society issue. Of course a child is going to say nasty things to their teacher and peers when they hear their parent at home saying those same things about others. Two things I’ve been trying to remind myself of daily: 1️⃣ I’m not perfect nor do I have to be, because for my children I am more than enough. ——— Both my experiences as a parent (my kids are currently 6 and 4) and as a teacher for the past 11 years (at all levels elementary - high school), the biggest thing I’ve noticed our kids want is just for us to be present. To be with them in the moment and fully there, not just pretending (because believe me, they can tell!)We we’re talking about respect in my classroom this week and that listening is more than just being quiet or occasionally acknowledging someone but how to truly be an active listener. I pulled out my phone and gave the example of how does it feel when you’re talking to someone and they are staring at their phone sometimes nodding or replying. The kids all agreed it doesn’t feel good and so many of them said “That’s what my mom does!” that honestly it broke my heart. I fail at this all the time but it doesn’t mean I am a failure - but moments like this are helpful reminders that what my kids what most from me is for me to truly watch with my whole self when they say “Hey Mom! Look at me!” 2️⃣ Doing my best to find joy in our current circumstances instead of wishing for them to change. There are so many things in our current life situation that I would change. I’d love to not have a chronic autoimmune illness that has left me with little energy and pain for the past 20 years. I’m considering how much longer I’ll be able to consider teaching as the current educational climate gets worse every year. That also makes me stress over the right decision for our kid’s future education. I love that my daughter isn’t a push over but sometimes I also wish she didn’t inherit quite such a big dose of her momma’s strong will 🤪But every season of life has its own beauty. Every day has something to be joyful for, even if it’s only another day
