Let's look at this 1919 poster, titled "True Blue." We see portraits of influential U.S. Presidents, like Abraham Lincoln (author of the Emancipation Proclamation which freed enslaved peoples) alongside George Washington and Woodrow Wilson.

Lincoln and Wilson both led the nation in fighting for a united democracy in wars of unexpected magnitude and duration. In 1865, emancipation on Juneteenth led to expanded voting access, rights of citizenship and access to the responsibilities of Democracy for millions of African Americans. In 1917, Wilson's justification for war was to "make the world safe for Democracy" - a hard-won concept just 50 years prior with President Lincoln.

By the end of the war, approximately 370,000 African American men had served in the U.S. military.
