Aerial firefighting training is taking place this week in Southern California!
Pilots who fly Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS) are conducting training exercises over the Angeles National Forest through Saturday. As part of the training in Southern California, practice water drops will be conducted on a few remote areas in the Angeles National Forest. Residents and visitors may see low-flying aircraft and smaller lead planes throughout the week.

Here is a look at a 146th Airlift Wing C-130 performing water drop training in the hills of Southern California in May 2016. Specifically, the training was conducted at the Channel Islands Air National Guard Station for the mission’s annual certification. Since 1974, MAFFS has been a leading joint effort with the military, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Department of Defense to fight wildland fires. Photo by Tech. Sgt. Maj. Michael Hall and Maj. Cullen Vetter, 731st Airlift Squadron pilots, use a virtual reality headset during annual modular airborne firefighting system training at Channel Islands Air National Guard Base, May 10, 2023. The headset, paired with some flight controls, afforded the pilots the chance to do MAFFS training in a virtual environment in a simulated C-130 aircraft crew compartment. 302nd Airlift Wing Airmen test the functionality of a MAFFS II unit loaded inside the cargo bay of a C-130H aircraft at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado in August of 2023. The nozzle of the MAFFS unit was installed by a team of 302nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chiefs. MAFFS II can discharge its load of 3,000 gallons (weighing 27,000 pounds) in less than five seconds. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Justin Norton) Location: Peterson Space Force Base, CO
In a matter of hours, MAFFS transforms standard military transport aircraft into 3,000-gallon air tankers capable of tackling destructive wildfires. MAFFS is modular and rolls on and off aircraft without any permanent modifications to the aircraft. Here, 153rd Airlift Wing Aerial Port members set up a trailer to remove the system out of the back of a C-130 Hercules aircraft on the flight line at Channel Islands Air National Guard Station in Port Hueneme, California.
Throwback to May 2019 as a C-130 Hercules aircraft loaded MAFFS II (Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System) drops a water line during annual training and recertification. Three of the MAFFS Air Expeditionary Group members - Colorado, Nevada, and Wyoming- participated in the week-long training. MAFFS is capable of dropping 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in 6 seconds and aircraft are activated to help out the US Forest Service tankers when wildfire activity is high.
