Of what use are the Ten Commandments? Are they just a list of rules outdated or just a list of rules that we begrudgingly obey? Not so says Jani Ortlund, well-known writer and conference speaker.

Get it at a discount today at Companion Books located in Cup of Joy Cafe in DeMotte.

Here are the publishers comments on the book,
"Many Christians view the Ten Commandments as laws they are forced to obey in order to stay on God's good side. In her book His Loving Law, Our Lasting Legacy, Jani Ortlund invites readers to look at the Ten Commandments from a different perspective. Ortlund urges believers to recognize the Ten Commandments as a mirror, reflecting our need for God's cleansing and forgiveness.

Throughout the book, each commandment is presented not as another rule to follow, but as an invitation to experience more of God's love. As readers grasp this knowledge, they are able to experience true freedom in Christ. They will begin to understand how embracing God's laws and passing them along to future generations offers a needy world a glimpse of the truth of God's love."

This series was commissioned by KDCR radio and originally recorded on nine LPs, presenting one of each of the Psalms found in the blue 1959 edition of the Psalter Hymnal. The instrumental Psalms contain at least one stanza which is sung. This project was re-mastered into a series of six CDs with generous assistance from the den Dulk Christian Foundation of Kingsburg, CA, to whom I am indebted to for giving these to me to give away. You will find them at Companion Books located in Cup of Joy Cafe in DeMotte

TWO BRAND NEW BOOKS AT NEARLY HALF PRICE
I just placed 2 new books on the bookshelves of Companion Books at Cup of Joy Cafe in DeMotte and they are nearly half price. These two books are destined to become classics. Check them out SOON!

Here is what Tim Challies says about "The Disciplines of A Godly Man. "“There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’—that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written. There’s little doubt that Disciplines of a Godly Man is one of these. For that reason, I’m delighted to see it just so slightly refreshed as it’s prepared to challenge a whole new generation of men with its biblical principles and timeless wisdom. I trust it will prove itself as edifying to them as it has to me and so many others.”
Tim Challies, author, Seasons of Sorrow

And here is what Colin Hanson has to say about "The Disciplines of A Godly Young Man. “Discipline is not a popular word these days. But disciplined Christians are growing Christians. So if you know a young man who wants to grow up in the faith, do him a big favor and buy him this book.”
Collin Hansen, Vice President and Editor in Chief, The Gospel Coalition; author, Timothy Keller: His Spiritual and Intellectual Formation

I am adding "The Ancient Love Song" by Charles Drew and forward by Edmund P. Clowney to Companion Books this morning. I am selling this one for $3.00 which does not reflect how valuable this book will be to your being able to spot Christ in the Old Testament.

Clowney says "If you love the bible, you'll love this book....it is a fresh and vivid retelling of the greatest story in the world. Read it a chapter at a time, and reflect on questions that will lift your horizons. Better still, use it with a group of friends and share your discoveries."

New and just in at Companion Books located in Cup of Joy Cafe : a leather bound copy of Valley of Vision for a discounted price of $15.
Some days it is very difficult to get started in praying. I found this collection of prayers helpful in getting my own fire started.

This is Banner of Truth's top selling book. Here is a sample of a prayer entitled "Need of Jesus"

LORD JESUS,
I am blind, be thou my light,
ignorant, be thou my wisdom
self-willed, be thou my mind
Open my ear to grasp quickly thy Spirit’s voice,
and delightfully run after his beckoning hand;
Melt my conscience that no hardness remain,
make it alive to evil’s slightest touch;
When Satan approaches may I flee to thy wounds,
and there cease to tremble at all alarms.
Be my good shepherd to lead me into the green pastures of thy Word,
and cause me to lie down beside the rivers of its comforts.
Fill me with peace, that no disquieting worldly gales
may ruffle the calm surface of my soul.
Thy cross was upraised to be my refuge,
Thy blood streamed forth to wash me clean,
Thy death occurred to give me a surety,
Thy name is my property to save me,
By thee all heaven is poured into my heart,
but it is too narrow to comprehend thy love.
I was a stranger, an outcast, a slave, a rebel,
but thy cross has brought me near,
has softened my heart,
has made me thy Father’s child,
has admitted me to thy family,
has made me joint-heir with thyself.
O that I may love thee as thou loves me,
that I may walk worthy of thee, my Lord,
that I may reflect the image of heaven’s first-born
May I always see thy beauty with the clear eye of faith,
and feel the power of thy Spirit in my heart,
for unless he move mightily in me
no inward fire will be kindled.

Two new discounted books today at Companion Books in Cup of Joy Cafe. There are worth taking a look at. Feel free to browse through them while having a cup of coffee!

The first is "Life in the Wild: Fighting for Faith in a Fallen World" The introduction to this book is written by Mike Cosper who wrote one of my favorite books "The Stories We Tell: How TV and Movies Long for and Echo the Truth. The publisher says of this book, "We see Jesus, we believe in Jesus and we wait for Jesus, yet still we suffer. This book offers real and rugged answers in life's dark places. Discover how to live with hope in a fallen, messed- up, wild world, and be encouraged."

The second book is "Songs of a Suffering King: The Grand Christ Hymn of Psalms 1-8 by J. V. Fesko. Gerald Bilkes has this to say about the book. "“Christians know they need instruction not only to pray but also to sing. By tracing the narrative of Christ in the opening eight psalms of the Psalter, this book helps me pray while I sing and sing while I pray. I learn not only to hear Christ in each psalm but I also begin to sing under the aegis of Christ, the chief musician. Those who have sung these psalms from their earliest days as well as those who have joined the Psalter choir only recently will find, with the Spirit’s blessing, deeper and fuller sound.”"

Joy for the World: How Christianity Lost Its Cultural Influence & Can Begin Rebuilding It. By Greg Foster with a forward by Tim Keller.

“Bouncy title, thoughtful subtitle, tight writing, and nuanced analysis: Joy for the World lays out enjoyably what we need to understand to save freedom of religion. Greg Forster brilliantly shows that we should expect, embrace, and work to preserve a crowded and uncomfortable public square, because if we’re scared by it the naked public square that results will weaken Christianity and America.”

Nancy Guthrie: Discovering Jesus introduction 30/12/2023

New today at Companion Books is Nancy Guthrie's one year devotional "The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in The Old Testament!

As some of you well know, Nancy and her husband are known as the cohosts of the Griefshare video series. Nancy is a well known bible teacher and author. It was her book "Even Better Than Eden" that introduced me to the Biblical Theology.

Listen in as she introduces the book. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC4QO96OBSA&t=20s

From the publisher -- We tend to look to the New Testament to tell us about Jesus, yet it was the Old Testament about which Jesus said, “the Scriptures point to me!” In The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie takes readers from Genesis through Malachi, shining the light of Christ on the promise of a descendent who will put an end to the curse of sin; the story of a father who offers up his son as a sacrifice; the symbol of a temple where people can meet with God; the prophecy of a servant who will suffer; the person of a king who will rule with righteousness—and so much more. Day by day throughout the year, readers will see the beauty of Christ in fresh new ways, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation for who Jesus is and what he accomplished through his Cross and Resurrection.

It cuts to my heart and reminds me of the supreme value of following Christ. May many families be greatly blessed by regularly reading this book.”

“The Preacher’s Catechism is a book from the heart that candidly reflects Allen’s own experience of the ups and downs of the preaching ministry. He writes in an engaging and fresh style that provokes thought. Here we find that preachers are ‘heavy lifters’ who need the ‘Monday gospel.’ This book will repay slow and reflective reading by preachers. It will foster the joyful obedience of a preacher, but also expose the activity of his flesh in all its ugliness. Take a little dose at a time and ponder it. Find in it pointers to the remedy for both pride and discouragement.
Garry J. Williams, Director, The Pastor’s Academy, London Seminary; author, His Love Endures Forever and Silent Witnesses

“Theology is not just for big people! From our very first days, it’s critical that we begin to learn about God—who he is, what he is like, and what he has done to save us in Jesus Christ. In Big Theology for Little Hearts, Devon and Jessica Provencher have provided an incredibly helpful resource for teaching your children about God and his gospel. With bold illustrations, childlike language, and beautiful simplicity, they faithfully unfold the theological truths that shape our Christian hope. If you’re a parent—or even if you’re not!—these little books will be a blessing and help to you.” Crossway Books
