2023 was a year of inspired action for One World and our grassroots member organizations. Our educational programming and strategic grantmaking generated organizational sustainability within our membership network, all while our member organizations continued to provide health, safety, shelter, food, education, healthcare, and economic opportunity to children and families in some of the most under-resourced communities in the world. Thank you for being there for One World, our members, and the children and families we all strive to support together.

With 19 staff members enrolled in One World’s succession planning course, Fundi Bots is ensuring that succession planning is embraced throughout their organization. They reported that the training series has positively affected the culture at their rapidly growing organization, encouraging openness and information sharing at all levels. For example, one staff member stated:

“[the trainings] helped me to embrace the idea that change is inevitable and when handled well is good and beneficial for growth. Additionally, it's been a reminder to me that like it or not, at every point as [my organization] grows, we will experience transitions at different levels. Therefore I ought to be ready but also ready my team and encourage/ position them for growth. Lastly, preparation is pivotal in managing and thriving through transition whether it's at the top level or whether it's me handing over my role and stepping into another. The question I have been asking myself is, are the systems and policies I'm building able to carry [my organization] forward even in the next 20 or so years when I'm long gone? Basically I'm now constantly thinking sustainability and long-term thriving of the organization."

Having grown from 35 to 125 staff over the last 2 years, Fundi Bots is at an exciting inflection point. One World awarded Fundi Bots a Sustainability Grant to help them develop their leadership team and high performing staff to guide the organization through their current period of growth and future leadership transitions. They will also use grant funds to build their internal operational systems to meet the needs of a larger team. Fundi Bots aims to use its Sustainability Grant to:

“build trust and bonds, uplift employee morale, improve well-being and boost the organization's effectiveness, and efficiency, all of which contribute to the organization's long-term success.” Solomon King, Founder & Executive Director

One World’s succession planning trainings hit home for St. Vincent de Paul Community Development Organization (St. Vincent). The organization realized it needed to plan now for a future beyond its visionary founding leader, Lucy Kayiwa (pictured with children).

For 23 years, Lucy has led St. Vincent in providing a nursery school, rescue center, and scholarships for children in Kibera, Kenya, one of Africa’s largest informal settlements.

While all organizations must grapple with succession planning, very few get support or training to help them navigate this important and often existential issue. This is especially true for small grassroots organizations, such as St Vincent. One World fills this gap in philanthropic support.

To help St. Vincent prepare for a successful future, One World awarded them a two-year Sustainability Grant to work with a local consultant to operationalize learnings from One World’s succession planning training series. St. Vincent is also using grant funds to train staff to take on operational tasks historically handled by members of the organization’s volunteer board of directors. This will position the organization to build the staff expertise required for a long-lasting, impactful future.

With your support, we are making an impact! Small, but mighty grassroots organizations such as St. Vincent are taking the steps necessary to be there for their communities long term. And children in a community affected by extreme poverty will receive shelter, early childhood education and help with primary school fees for many years to come. Please give today!

It’s Giving Tuesday! Give differently this year with One World. Please donate at
https://support.oneworldchildrensfund.org/give/77896/ #!/donation/checkout

Grassroots leaders work tirelessly to help children, but the funds they need for critical infrastructure are few and far between. One World fills that gap by funding projects designed to strengthen organizations for the benefit of the children they serve.

For 13 years, The Action Foundation has built inclusive and resilient Kenyan communities where children with disabilities can thrive. As the Action Foundation looked toward the future, they realized their social enterprise could help them achieve long-term financial sustainability. The Action Foundation sells merchandise produced by caregivers in the disability community (see items pictured left), but sales were small. One World awarded the Action Foundation a two-year Sustainability Grant to bring on the sales and marketing expertise needed to leverage this resource. As a result, the Action Foundation has already seen a 150% increase in sales. This new revenue source will help them continue delivering therapy to children with disabilities throughout Kibera, Kenya.

Join us in giving differently to help grassroots organizations improve the lives of children now and for many years to come. Please give generously today.

Next week is Giving Tuesday, inviting people to kick off the holiday season by giving generously to nonprofits. Please donate to One World at
https://support.oneworldchildrensfund.org/give/77896/ #!/donation/checkout

Many donors expect nonprofits to use their gifts to help them deliver programs. But One World knows that stronger organizational infrastructure leads to maximum programmatic impact. We give differently to help organizations build the foundation for lasting impact.

Reach a Hand Uganda is a great example (pictured). The team at Reach a Hand are communications experts, delivering video and written content to help more than 50,000 youth make informed decisions regarding sexual and reproductive health. One World awarded Reach a Hand a Sustainability Grant to use their communications expertise to generate ongoing revenue. They purchased equipment and began using their expertise to create media for other organizations. In the first year, they have already raised $20,000 of new income that is invested back into the organization’s programs.

Let’s be different and help grassroots organizations create sustainable programmatic futures. Please give generously this Giving Tuesday.

We are thrilled to share an opportunity to gather in person with one of our inspiring grassroots member organizations, Kliptown Youth Program (KYP).

KYP’s team and I will talk about how we work together to change the lives of children in one of the poorest communities in South Africa. Check out this video to see how KYP has used fiscally sponsored funds to transform their community and created a joyful and supportive space for children to learn and play. KYP operates an after-school program, providing meals, school fees, uniforms, tutoring, sports, and performing arts for children in Soweto.

We hope to see you there! Even if you can’t make it, you can participate by making a gift to One World today. Let’s provide hope and inspiration to children in under-resourced communities by working with impactful grassroots organizations, such as KYP.

Come meet us and one of our grassroots members! RSVP and donate!

Philanthropic resources available to grassroots organizations are shrinking, “[i]n Sub-Saharan Africa, funding declined for a second year in a row” (2022 Advancing Human Rights Annual Review of Global Foundation Grantmaking). Our cornerstone service, fiscal sponsorship, enables international grassroots organizations to fundraise in the United States with the benefit of increased visibility, an online platform, accounting and donor relations assistance, and donor confidence supported by One World’s vetting and monitoring processes. Our member organizations receive tax exempt donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations, increasing the flow of philanthropic resources to where they are needed most.

In the last year, we helped $3.2M in donations and grants reach community-based organizations. These organizations are best situated to provide effective and lasting solutions to the problems of poverty, poor health, economic insecurity, homelessness, and insufficient educational opportunities in their communities.

Make a gift today and help grassroots organizations improve the lives of children and families around the world.

Become a monthly donor today! Monthly donations (even small amounts) make an outsized impact on One World and the children we all come together to support.

Our strategic grant-making and educational programming are the most powerful when we can plan multi-year programs and grants. Support from monthly donors is crucial for forward-thinking, responsive programming.

Photo: Grace started her education in the nursery school at St. Vincent's in Kibera, Kenya. Kibera is the largest informal settlement in Africa, with most residents earning less than $1/day. Recurring donations fiscally sponsored by One World helped Grace get the scholarships she needed to succeed through secondary school and plan for a university education to become a high school teacher. Grace volunteers at St. Vincent's to help educate the next generation.

Recently, One World’s strategic grant-making helped St. Vincent's launch their “Better Parenting” program, which is designed to improve parent-child relationships and prevent domestic violence. The program provides parents an opportunity to process trauma, experience community, and learn how to support the development of young children. We are inspired by seeing how St. Vincent's continues to grow through their long-term relationship with One World.

One World's Resilience Fund helps organizations continue core programs while responding to emergencies.

Wezesha Impact in Uganda used their Resilience Fund grant to provide young entrepreneurs with business training and mentorship, so these young adults could support themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the young refugees who went through Wezesha’s program was recently featured by Uganda's National Newspaper, the New Vision:

"Patient Baraka, together with his sister, fled from DR Congo in 2016, owing to political instability, and settled in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Isingiro District [Uganda]. He was convinced that becoming a refugee had shattered his dream of becoming a doctor. Today, he is not a doctor, but he is contributing to the fight against malaria, one of Uganda's top killer diseases. He manufactures a mosquito repellent under the brand name Botanica."

In addition to protecting children from Malaria, Baraka’s thriving small business employs refugee mothers, creating economic strength for vulnerable families that ripples throughout the community. We are honored to support Wezesha Impact and the young adults they empower through their entrepreneurship program.
