A lady called me from the Governor's office and said, "Good afternoon. This is _______; is this the Commissioner?"

I almost said, "Sorry, ma'am, you must have the wrong number." But, oh yeah... I was sworn in last week... it's the Commissioner.

And I couldn't be prouder to serve this great state.

My first official trip to Austin was fascinating, educational and inspiring. Our Governor is a brilliant guy with a huge heart and an enormous capacity for work. I am happy to be a small part of his team.

Our Commission on the Arts in Texas will be reviewing applications for grants related to the arts; it helps develop art-related industries in the state so Texas will be the preferred and most desirable of locations chosen for shooting motion pictures and television shows. It designates and supports development of Arts Districts and Historical Districts within communities allowing them to take advantage of incentives to enhance the beauty and viability of interesting business locations worthy of preservation and enhancement. It participates in school and non-profit groups which encourage, instruct, display and honor the arts from music, to dance, to sculpture, to painting, to poetry... in many ways, a community's involvement in art and artistic pursuits helps to define the quality of life of that community, and investing in these things will be a pure pleasure.

If I hadn't already been a busy person I don't think the Governor would have considered asking me to give some time to the Lone Star State.... and although I didn't really need another job, I am very happy to have this one.

Today marks 2,671 days that our shelter dog, Grace, has been homeless.
Grace has not had any applications in months.
Grace has nothing to call her own.
Grace is a senior dog, approximately 9 years old.
Grace has wasted almost 7 of those precious years here at ECHS.
No dog should have to spend a day at a shelter, let along 2,671 of them.
Grace NEEDS to find a place to go.

Last year after subzero temps left dozens of neighbors without water, Sunset Charity called in plumbers and even water well contractors and we got a lot of needy elderly people's water running again. Dozens of children living in poverty in Erath County had Christmas presents under a tree this year that would not have been there without some timely financial help. A single mom needed her car repaired before she could drive to and from work to keep her children fed; we answered that call. We aren't out to save the world; Sunset Charity is there to make it just a little more tolerable for those less fortunate. We are a registered nonprofit, public benefit charitable corporation in the State of Texas and we welcome your contributions if you care to do so. We can give you a receipt for the charitable donation of a car or boat, running or not, if you care to give that way. There are no paid employees, no rent charged to the charity, no kickbacks to fundraising organizations. Every cent contributed by Ruth and me, or any of you, is spent on helping people who are trying to help themselves and needing a temporary hand up. We are considering making this cabin an Airbnb destination this year, benefitting the charity.

It features a kitchen with an electric stove, Keurig coffee maker, fridge, two bedrooms (twin over full bunk bed in one room, king-sized bed in the other), indoor plumbing (shower, tub and john), a wood burning heater-stove, fireplace in the tiny living room, a 4-seater bar with a gratis bottle of Man in Black tequila, a 1 acre horse pen adjacent to the house with shade and water and miles of scenic trails on a section of scenic, wooded Texas countryside.

We founded this charity to provide emergency assistance to local parents with children during crises. We’ve bought food, tires, paid for medical treatment, school shoes and clothing. Our leads come from many sources including Big Brothers-Big Sisters, CASA and family services agencies as well as tips from the public.

We love the north Texas region and the good people of this area and it’s our obligation to help those less fortunate.
