If you're without power following yesterday's storms, here's a reminder on making sure your food remains safe during a power outage. Read about food safety during and after a power outage at https://bit.ly/3zCyzqr

During a power outage: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. If the doors stay closed, food will stay safe for up to: 4 hours in a refrigerator, 48 hours in a full freezer, 24 hours in a half-full freezer. If the power has been out for 4 hours, and a cooler and ice are available, put refrigerated perishable foods in the cooler. To keep them at 40°F or below, add ice or a cold source like frozen gel packs.

After a power outage: Never taste food to determine if it is safe to eat. When in doubt, throw it out. Throw out perishable food in your refrigerator (meat, fish, cut fruits and vegetables, eggs, milk, and leftovers) after 4 hours without power or a cold source like dry ice. Throw out any food with an unusual odor, color, or texture. If you have an appliance thermometer in your freezer, check to see if it is still at 40 °F or below.
Check temperatures of food kept in coolers or your refrigerator with an added cold source. Throw out food that has thawed or is above 40°. You can safely refreeze or cook thawed frozen food that still contains ice crystals or is at 40 °F or below. Check this FoodSafety.gov chart for a list of what foods you should throw out and foods you can refreeze.

There's a fine balance to ensuring you don't end up in a tough financial spot over necessary fixes while also not risking the deal falling through.

If you need a break from clean up, there are local establishments who are letting residents come in to cool off and charge devices.

Here are essential tips to ensure you and your loved ones stay safe after storm damage:

Inspect for Structural Damage: Check your home for any signs of structural damage. Look for cracks, shifts, or compromised walls and ceilings.

Avoid Downed Power Lines: Steer clear of downed or damaged power lines. Report them to your utility company immediately.

Check for Gas Leaks: If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the gas valve, open windows, and evacuate the area. Contact your gas company or emergency services.

Stay Out of Flooded Areas: Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters. They may conceal hazards like sharp objects, electrical currents, or contamination.

Document Damage: Take photos or videos of any damage for insurance claims. Make a detailed inventory of affected items.

Wear Protective Gear: When cleaning up debris, wear sturdy gloves, boots, and protective clothing to avoid injury.

Prevent Mold: Dry out wet areas as soon as possible. Use fans, dehumidifiers, and ventilation to prevent mold growth.

Beware of Scams: Be cautious of unsolicited contractors. Verify credentials and check references before agreeing to any repairs.
