Yup, it’s a painting. After nearly 10 years. The urge came on quite suddenly, but for awhile I'd been needing to make something larger, more colorful, less constrained by technique and medium. Painting has few boundaries, and I was feeling a need for that. It was a bit like getting back on a bike, and I skinned my knee a little, but it was worth it for what I learned.
Just for a bit of context, early in my art career I was an expressionist painter. I’d attack a huge canvas with heavy globs of bright paint with barely more than an emotion for inspiration, rarely sketched in advance. This current more rational, formal style grew gradually over many years. I still retain some of that early impulse to get an image out quickly and without fuss or preparation. Thank goodness for digital art tools. It’s extremely difficult to create the precise, organized images I love in a short amount of time with traditional mediums.
