THE "NEVER FEED" with ECLECTUS DIETS.
Diet issues: 1) Never feed colored pellets. The dyes in colored pellets are extremely irritating to eclectus parrots to the point that those on a continuous diet of colored pellets have been known to chew on their flesh. (Chemical Dyes and Our Birds’ Health by Alicia McWatters, PhD.http://www.africangreys.com/articles/nutrition/chemical.htm)
2) Never feed vitamins UNLESS a medical veterinary test has indicated a specific bird is low in a specific vitamin. The best solution then is to feed diet items which provide that vitamin in natural form. Adding vitamins to the daily food as a routine practice often leads to muscle spasms known as toe tapping and wing flipping. This is the result of man-made vitamin A which cannot be easily flushed from the eclectus system and ends up creating an effect which blocks the natural uptake of calcium from the blood into the muscles. (GREG J. HARRISON, DVM, Dipl ABVP-Avian, Dipl ECAMS DEBRA McDONALD, P hD, BS c (HONS I) http://avianmedicine.net/cont…/uploads/…/03/04nutrition2.pdf)
3) Never feed eggs to eclectus parrots. They do not normally consume eggs in the wild, except for nesting hens who will often consume the shells of hatchlings or will consume infertile eggs. When fed cooked chicken eggs on a routine basis, veterinary necropsy reports on young birds that have died indicate plaque filled arteries. Owners of these birds indicate that they have routinely fed eggs to their pet eclectus parrots, sometimes as often as three times a week. (Dr. Paul Welch, described necropsy of parrot fed eggs every week, a young African grey.)
4) Never feed a diet consisting primarily of pellets to an eclectus parrot. Vegetable fiber and roughage is an important component of their diet. Recent research on eclectus diet has indicated the importance of fruits and fiber. (Dr. Rob Marshall's presentation at International Conference on Avian Herpetological and Exotic mammal medicine ICARE in Venice, Italy, in March, 2017 (youtube video is gone from the internet!)
5) Never feed pasta, breads, and related processed foods to an eclectus. These foods end up causing serious metabolic problems for these parrots. What works well for other parrot species may not work for eclectus parrots due to their long digestive tract which so efficiently pulls ingredients from all consumed foods.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
How to cook Thanksgiving dinner when you live with a parrot
Get up early in the morning & have a cup of coffee. It's going to be a long day, so place your Parrot on a perch nearby to keep you company while you prepare the meal.
Remove Parrot from kitchen counter and return him to perch.
Prepare stuffing and remove Parrot from edge of stuffing bowl. Return parrot to perch.
Stuff turkey & place it in the roasting pan. Remove Parrot from edge of pan and return him to perch. Have another cup of coffee to steady your nerves.
Remove Parrot's head from turkey cavity and return him to perch. Re-stuff the turkey.
Prepare relish tray, and remember to make twice as much so that you'll have a regular size serving after the Parrot has eaten his fill.
Remove parrot from kitchen counter and return him to perch.
Prepare cranberry sauce. Discard berries "accidentally" flung to the floor by Parrot.
Peel potatoes. Remove Parrot from edge of potato bowl and return him to perch.
Arrange sweet potatoes in a pan & cover with brown sugar & mini marshmallows.
Remove Parrot from edge of pan and return him to perch. Replace missing marshmallows.
Brew another pot of coffee. While it is brewing, clean up the torn filter and pry coffee bean from Parrot's beak. Have another cup of coffee & remove Parrot from kitchen counter and return him to perch.
***When time to serve the meal: - Place roasted turkey on a large platter, and cover beak marks with strategically placed sprigs of parsley.
Put mashed potatoes into serving bowl and rewhip at last minute to conceal beak marks and claw prints.
Place pan of sweet potatoes on sideboard, forget presentation as there's no way to hide the areas of missing marshmallows.
Put rolls in decorative basket. Remove Parrot from side of basket and return him to perch.
Remove beaked rolls and serve what's left.
Set a stick of butter out on the counter to soften - think better and return it to the refrigerator.
Wipe down counter to remove mashed potato claw tracks.
Remove Parrot from kitchen counter and return him to perch.
Cut the pie into serving slices. Wipe whipped cream off Parrot's beak and place large dollops of remaining whipped cream on pie slices.
Whole slices are then served to guests, beaked-out portions should be reserved for host & hostess.
Place Parrot inside cage & lock the door.
Sit down to a nice relaxing di nner with your family - accompanied by plaintive cries of "WANT DINNER!" from the other room.
Got a sweetvupdated picture Te'ka. .
