There are many reasons why a child may behave a certain way. Take the time to check in with your children about their feelings!
This is Why PTSD Trauma Feels Like it's Happening Now Discover groundbreaking research on PTSD, as a new brain imaging study uncovers how traumatic memories differ from normal ones.
The holiday season is the perfect storm for meltdowns and tantrums. This can be SO frustrating for parents when they are simply trying to create happy memories for their children,
WHY???
(1) A child’s brain is more easily overwhelmed by sensory input (due to an underdeveloped hippocamus and thalmus)
(2) They lack the emotional awareness adults do. Children who can’t identify their emotions or their needs may get easily overwhelmed.
(3) No coping skills: It’s hard to manage your emotions if you don’t have the skills. These take time to learn and master
(4) Unrealistic expectations: there may be pressure to get dressed up, take perfect family pictures, and be in a good mood for meals and events when that may not be how they are feeling inside
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

How this started...
My childhood was not the “typical” one that most people picture. It was challenging at times, and filled with trauma. However, I knew from a young age that I wanted to help people in some capacity. My childhood is where this journey began.
My husband and I grew up in the same small town. We did not start dating until many years later when our paths crossed again at Olivet College. I studied Psychology and he studied Criminal Justice. We both obtained our Bachelor of Arts degrees in 2010. After working in the child welfare system for three years I decided to jump back into college. I enrolled in the Masters in Counseling program at Spring Arbor University. I continued to work full-time while going to school full-time.
While completing my Master's Degree, I was required to complete 700 hours of clinical service under the direct supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor. I was placed at THRIVE Counseling Services with Anna Walton MA, LPC; who continues to be my acting supervisor. In May 2016, I finally graduated with my Master's Degree in Counseling.
I have been working as a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor since September 2016 and passed the National Counseling Exam in October 2017, which means I am now a National Certified Counselor. My passion is working with teenagers and young adults, specifically college-aged. From 2015-2018 I worked as an independent therapist at Olivet College providing mental health services to students, staff, and facility. However, I am not a full-time investigator at the Eaton County Friend of the Court; working with families and conducting custody evaluations, parenting time investigations, and providing mediation services to prevent further court involvement.
