Last night was wild! Waking up at 2 am to tend to our temporary k9 companion, finding myself awe struck outside!

What the heck is that?
Aliens?
End of the world?
The Moon is exploding?

Nah! It's a moondog! Moondogs are formed by the same process as sundogs, with moonlight passing through ice crystals and creating a mirrored effect.

A member of the halo family, moon dogs are caused by the refraction of moonlight by hexagonal-plate-shaped ice crystals in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.

They typically appear as a pair of faint patches of light, at around 22° to the left and right of the Moon, and at the same altitude above the horizon as the Moon.

According to folklore, moon dogs are signs of approaching storms or bad weather. Because cirrus clouds often appear a few days before a large storm, this lore is scientifically sensible, although the same clouds can occur without any consistent weather change.

Seeing a sundog and a moondog in the same year, without ever learning or seeing them before, makes me feel like this year was a pretty lucky one!

Despite not having our old k9 companion to share these "dogs" with, we are thankful for 2023 and all the real and atmospheric dogs it brought.

November updates from G and A!

Garrett became an official mountain bad ass by shooting his first buck this year, we are proud, we are living off the land, the Montana way! (Not pictured)

Spent some quality time with Ma and Pa Hohn, shooting archery - their favorite pass time activity. Results by points: pa, ma, Garrett, Alla, though Alla was in 3rd for a short while 😋

Finally, after 13 years, we installed a chimney and a wood stove. Burning wood, split by our wonderful guests over the summer makes us so warm and grateful!

We are baaack in Mexico for a few weeks, skipping (some of the) Winter. It feels so good to be back because we LOVE the food!

Tacos, specifically Surtido Carnitas (pork Tacos with mixed meat) are worth the 3 flights to get here.

Alla finally gets to catch up on reading and "The Art of Gathering" as recommended by Reese Witherspoon in her own book, is sooo good!!!

Garrett and I are finding new ways to nurture our 14 year old bond with chat prompts like this one.

We celebrated G's birthday with a walk in the park to be surprised with an unexpected Flamenco Performance. It's the small things...

We are celebrating being alive, completing another hosting season at The Hohnstead and nurturing our passions for travel in Mexico.

Queretaro - Morelia - Cuernavaca - Toluca - Puebla and a few more to go. Stay tuned in Stories to see where we go next!

October Photo Dump
What a fun activity to review your month's highlights or moments that you may have forgotten about:

1. We LOVE when our guests leave us hand-written notes (and photos) in the guest books, it shows us that we're on the right track :)

2. Soo many mushrooms in the forest this fall, we even had a guest forage 2 different edible varieties, one of which she called "chicken of the forest" because apparently it tastes like chicken. So Garrett put it in his mouth, but we had him spit it out haha (he didn't hear the fact that the mushroom has to be cooked first, duh)

3. Shooting practice with ma and pa, check out our stories to see why they are cool AF

4. Missoula Business Women Retreat was so much fun, thank you for coming

5. Love frolicking through the woods with my camera, catching special moments such as this one.

6. When our guests make splitting wood look easy and just keep going and going and going.

7. Garrett and I in Missoula among the many maple trees before snow rolled in.

8. This new mural near Caras Park in Missoula is gorgeous, love all the representations and details, great job .art

9. We road-tripped North by a few hours to visit our old stomping grounds. This is Kootenai Falls - a must see attraction up there.

10. This naughty boy came to visit, luckily stayed around for a few stellar photos (I love living in such a wild place)

October being the last month our resort was open this 2023 season filled our hearts with the final moments of a fantastic hosting season. We love the job and we love the break too, so stay tuned to see where in the world this month will take us and the adventures we're going to get into.

Get ready for more Garrett and Alla content, we love inspiring, living radically (someone said about us), but most importantly being together is our strongest point.

🌕🐺 Halloween in the forest brought a spooky surprise! Last night, as we lay in our cozy beds, the howls of real wolves filled the air. Nature's own eerie soundtrack as Garrett and I laid there completely frozen in the moment...

Star Bathing, or Mindful Stargazing, Is One Shimmery, Celestial Way To Ground Yourself With Calm and Connection 29/10/2023

Don't forget about the power of "Star Bathing" when outside especially in the fall season when the temps outside aren't as cold as in the winter time to gawk at stars.

Star Bathing, or Mindful Stargazing, Is One Shimmery, Celestial Way To Ground Yourself With Calm and Connection Star bathing, or looking up at the night sky without any expectation, is one aligned wellness practice you should try. Learn from a meditation expert and astrophysicist all about how to cultivate inner peace through mindful stargazing.

Thank You 😊 A perfect score on Airbnb throughout the entire hosting season!

Garrett and I are thrilled to provide a vacation destination that is memorable, fun, and makes you feel like a kid again.

We can't wait for 2024 hosting season (doors reopen in May '24) after we have a chance to travel, seek inspiration and bring back ideas to make The Hohnstead awesome AF.

Winter came early this year and the feelings are mixed here at The Hohnstead.

Alla is frolicking through the woods with her phone and camera in tow, wearing a winter jacket, Muck boots and is happy as a 10 year old who used ski with her dad in The Carpathian Mountains.

Garrett is mad 😡

So needless to say, we are closing the resort early this year, and look forward to resting, relaxing and vacationing ourselves.

Thank you everyone for making our 2023 another awesomely memorable hosting season. We've welcomed back so many returning guests this year, which makes our hearts overflow with joy 😊 We hosted a lot of newbies, who fell in love with the forest and the tranquility of this place and we hope to see you all again, in 2024!

Season will reopen in May of 2024.

I'll tell you what - one of the coolest perks about being a Superhost AGAIN is that once a year you get $100 credit to use towards an Airbnb Trip or Experience. So while the weather is nice, fall foliage is peaking, we're going to do just that - take a trip up north to visit some old friends of ours who also happen to host, love it, and thrive! Looking for a stunning place to see Larch Trees change colors this October?

Check out Gus - North America's largest Larch and possibly the largest in the world as well, only 1 hour away from The Hohnstead.

Gus is impressive, estimated to be over 1000 years old, is taller than the Statue of Liberty, and sits in Girard Grove, which is full of other 600 year old larches and the best part - the entrance (there is no entrance just a dirt path from a parking lot) is FREE!

Over the past couple of days, I got to share visiting Gus with a few tree-admiring guests, one of them introducing me to her country's famed tree, named Doug, which is a Douglas Fir, and is Canada's largest and tallest Douglas Fir.

Gus and Doug -- couldn't be better named for 1000+ year old trees 🤣

When visiting Gus, you can pair the trip with a hike to one of the picturesque lakes in the area called Holland Lake and Falls, or check out Morrell Falls for a longer hike without the lake. Or do both, if you're staying nearby.

Fall in Montana may not be as photogenic as some other parts in the U.S. but larches and their yellowing needles give us that color that undoubtedly will make you say: Whoa!

The Hohnsetad hosting season will close its rustic doors on October 30, 2023.

Make your reservations soon!

One of these things is not like the other, can you tell?
That's right! Upfront, brown and beautiful is "Miracle" - chicken that lived through some @ #%%. She survived as the rest of her flock of tiny chicks got exterminated by a hungry skunk. We got that a-hole on camera, but only after the fact :(

Such is life at the Hohnstead Homestead, and we're happy to see Miracle thrive with the older flock of OG girls, which are steadily providing some tasty eggs.

Sometimes we even share with the guests for that True Montana Homestead Experience.

September Recap in 10 photos

1. Birthday Month started off with a sight, always involves a lot of running to get the camera, screaming (from excitement) and some more running around to get ALL THE ANGLES (yup, Im that girl :P

2. Our "do even have a plan?" garden did pretty well this year, with lots of greenery for our Shed guests to enjoy and lots of potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and hops to consume. Next year's no plan plan is filling in raised beds with organic materials like clean plain cardboard, egg shells, decaying wood and leaves before we add new soil in the spring.

3. Love when you get some almost dead "here have it for free" plant from the nursery just to see it thrive in our "no plan garden"

4. We did a thing! In between guests we knocked down a wall, put up a wall and added 100sq ft extra living space to our apartment. When your total comes to 500, 100 sq ft is A LOT!

5. We grew a thing :)

6. We hosted an engagement, these kids were babies, but so was I getting hitched at 23 :)

7. Savoring the sunshine on the lake in September is a feeling you'll remember through the winter. Then getting caught in the rain while fishing. Then realizing that you forgot a sleeping bag while camping by the lake. Doh!

8. Alla turned 38 and quickly traveled to Japan to snap this bad a$$ photo. No, Japan came to Draughtworks Brewery and we LOVED IT! Also loved getting free beers, so my husband can gladly drink them.

9. So many returning guests this September!!! They know that September is THE PERFECT time! This is Calvin, his energy and playfullness made The Hohnstead buzz for a 2 weeks. XOXO

10. Our "quick, let's do this before the next guests" was so much fun, putting on our thinking/building/creating caps and going to work! We love this place for the ability to transform it, and our spaces being small, each and every project is done so rapidly.

Yay to another montly recap, it's always such a great tradition to maintain (if social media can have traditions). Thanks for the inspiration guru-queen

What does your month of September look like in 10 images? Comment below, I'd love to frolick through your post.
