Donnelly Auctions, sells more antique and craftsman tools at auction than any other entity in the world. Our auctions are held in Nashua, New Hampshire at the Holiday Inn at Exit 4 from Route 3 and in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Ramada Inn East. Each summer, our Antique Fair, Open House and Auction of 3001 Lots, held the last weekend of July, draws hundreds of eager buyers from around the country and around the world.

Not quite a tool, but a portrait of a famous inventor of tools painted by his brother, who was a prominent 19th Century painter of protraits....
An ARTIST'S OIL PAINTED COPY 1857 PORTRAIT OF RANSOM COOK. This portrait was painted by Ransom Cook's brother, Nelson Cook in Rome, New York in 1877. The back of the painting painted in beautiful black script reads "Copy, painted in April 1877, of a portrait of Ransom Cook, painted in 1857. Both by Nelson Cook. Rome, N. Y." Ransom Cook was the inventor of the Cook's Patent auger bits, U.S. Patent No. 8162, patented on June 17, 1851 and several other auger bit related U.S. Patents. The Cook's Patent bits are noted for the closed cutting loops on each side of the bit and the facility of those bits for boring holes that do not follow the grain of the wood. Nelson was Ransom's younger brother and for 7 years Nelson was apprentice to Ransom, who made furniture at the time in Saratoga, NY. Both brothers became very successful so when Nelson began doing portraits, it seems only natural that big brother would agree to "sit" for a painting. We must note a small tear in canvas of this painting which is mounted in a beautiful gilt frame.

This horse of a different color came out of a box of consigned tools received from Vermont yesterday. There are no marks on the bevel, which has a 3" body and a 3 1/2" blade, but the casting has the distinctive "diamond" pattern used by the St. Johnsbury Tool Company and the same "stippled" pattern found on the bodies of some St. Johnsbury bevels. As the center photo shows, the screw on the bottom moves the interior brass piece upward. The upper end is tapered to lock the bevel blade in place when the screw is turned clockwise. It will be sold as Lot 328 in our First Wednesday Online Only Antique Tool Auction in March.

A rare DOUBLE DOOR WALL MOUNT TOOL CHEST, No. 851, by STANLEY. This uncommon Black Walnut tool chest retains both of its original Stanley brass signs and nearly all of the original tools, all in top collector quailty condition.

Among the greatest pleasures of what has now been nearly twenty-five years in the antique tool auction business, has been the thousands of delightful people who have participated in the auctions, consigned items for sale or worked as part of our team in making the auctions so successful over such a long period of time. Throughout that period, we have been blessed with talented and loyal auctioneers in the person of Paul Wilmott of Hillsborough, New Hampshire, who called his first sale for us in 2001 and Bill Baxter of Indianapolis, Indiana, who began calling our Indianapolis sales in 2002. Neither of them missed a single auction from that point forward. Christopher Wilmott, Paul’s son, joined us, at the age of eight, eleven years ago and he has steadily progressed from an entertaining novelty to a talented and competent professional auctioneer. Peggi Nightingale, Christopher’s mother, has been at Paul’s side helping with the sales throughout that time and Bill Baxter’s wife Terri has been an equally important member of our team. It was an absolute delight to be reunited with these loyal and stalwart folks at our recently completed Spectacular Summer Auction where, as always, they did a first-class job. Many thanks to the Wilmotts and the Baxters for their essential role in making this enterprise what it has become. We and they will be back again next summer for another great “live” auction event. We hope you can join us then.
