“In the back of my head, I’m hearing those voices of my mom, ‘oh you’re not gonna have a future if you don’t have a degree in Israel, one degree, that’s not even enough. You’re gonna have two degrees to have a good paying job’. And I always heard those voices, and I said to myself, ‘I gotta do it. I gotta do it’. Though I’d been falling asleep in class, even missing some classes. The teacher was very sweet…I was portraying to her like I’m this hard working girl that is not in touch with her family and that I have to work late hours, so she was very compassionate towards me. Sometimes she let me get out of class to sleep on the bench outside and come back. Anyway, I struggled for months and even tried to link up with people from the school after to be ready. And I remember maybe a month before the final exams, I was watching dance videos on my phone, under the table. And I’m telling you, like in the movies, I hear the voice of my mom, of the degrees and this and that, and I’m like, “f this, I can’t do this anymore.” I just got up, like in the movies, I got all the books, went outside and threw them all in the trash. I remember walking out of that school and having a 50-50 feeling of extreme fear with extreme liberation. Does that make sense? Really, I felt like a free bird coming out of the cage, but she doesn’t know anything outside of the cage, so she’s free, but literally like that. And my life shifted from that exact day. I literally signed up for a dance studio, I think, the same week, I started taking dance classes. I’ve had the most beautiful time in my life since.”

“So coming out of high school in New York City, I had a volleyball scholarship, right? Like a small one, City College. I was doing that, and then my mom got sick. It was something that kind of turned my life a little bit, it was just me and her for a period of time. So when she got sick, I had to step up, and started to work. Giving up my scholarship and giving up my opportunity in college was one of the opportunities in life that I kind of wish I could have taken. Like go back and kind of do it just to see if I was good. Because in New York City, I was like, really good. I was one of the best players back in 2008 and I was coming out of high school really hot with, newspapers talking about me and all that was really cool. That was a very interesting piece of my life, and not being able to fulfill that, see where it could have gone, was something that was like, man, it kind of stung a little bit, but I was able to, I was able to help. Again, there’s no way I could ever pay my mom back for everything that she did for me throughout all these years, right? Getting me here, right? She was one of the main reasons why I’m in this country (from Colombia), why I’m an American citizen, why I’m able to do the things that I do now, right, and enjoy the freedom that I can have here in the States. But it was one of those challenges that it was like, there’s a bummer, like a bump in the road, but it led me back to dance again. Dance was one of the few, big, major things in my life I have always resonated with. It’s this idea of like, yo, if I lean into dance, good things happen! I meet great people. I am my best self. I am able to show people who I am, because I’m usually very introverted.”
