Sunrise concept for a terraced entry stairway, navigating the steep hillside site at our Mosier Oregon custom home.
Initially we sketched this scrub white oak inside the courtyard - upon further consideration of the site we shifted the building - cantilevered out over the floor below to preserve this row of trees that now provide shade to the south side of the house.
I've heard that there are two types of architects. The ones who are lining things up - and those who are shaking things up. This image of the wood framing at our house in Mosier is a good example of the benefits of lining things up - you get a certain peace and harmony from structural order that is super satisfying.
You gotta get that foundation right! Don and Ben working through the details on our Mosier build.

Partway through high school I moved from Bellingham WA, to Grants Pass in Southern Oregon where the landscape has a striking similarity to Mosier Oregon. So for me to have the privilege to build in Mosier and live in Portland hits a nostalgic note that is familiar yet unexplored. Situated just beyond Hood River, Mosier offers respite from the Portland's rain. Any sense of the Coastal weather systems evaporate as you drive around the bend from Hood River to Mosier and the geology takes on a minimalist character with the big sweeping lines of the the Coyote wall - a syncline formed of basalt rock flows. From Mosier Bluff you can see the contrast between the wind blown ledges of the Synclines to the more protected valley's of the Anticlines. Observing the contrast in Mosier where the plant life exists in a bit more tension with the geology and climate has offered design inspiration for the natural extension of our homes from the site.
Situated on a steeply sloped site on Mosier Bluff our current home under construction is starting to take shape. Here we have the recently poured foundation showing how the plan of the house inflects like a the shape of a boomerang to take advantage of views up Mosier Valley and conform the home to the shape of the land. The inflection also allows for a more generous outdoor patio area on the uphill side of the house that will be wind sheltered and is graced by this magnificent White Oak tree. We planned the site grading of the home to be level with the big tree and offset the house so that when you ascend up the entry steps you see the Oak tree as it flanks that back patio area. Another giant Oak flanks the ADU a short walk to the East...more to come on how the site design responds to the "East Oak".

Landscape architects Bethany Rydmark () and Christopher Olin are onsite at our Maya Way Mosier project. We’re excited to see how their expertise brings the home and landscape together. Their work on challenging site grading, planting, site access, and green roof details is key to restoring the ecosystem and seamlessly stitching the home into its surroundings.
Future Mosier ADU views - not to shabby!
Interiors coming together in Mosier. Great things start small and we applied this principal to our design of the ADU and the main house, where the conceptual development of the ADU is driving the design of the main house.
