Home 2.0 - Evergreen Psychotherapy Center 21/10/2023

Many of the families I work with are asking me "how do I talk with our kids about what's going on in Israel and Gaza?". This is my recommendation to them. Go to www.evergreenpsychotherapycenter.com and in right hand column scroll down to "Recent Posts" and click on "How to Help Your Children Cope with What They Are Seeing in Israel and Gaza.". Dr. Terry Levy is an expert in healing trauma and attachment issues, and encouraging honest, authentic communication in families. He addresses topics such as talking with young children vs. teens, and especially children who have had prior trauma and are being triggered. The instinct to avoid talking about these very horrific, painful events/images is natural, but not helpful. Also limiting children's exposure to the visuals on news and media is important. His suggestions are excellent for us adults as well!

Many parents I speak with each week are struggling with their pre-teens/teens about time spent on their smart phones specifically, and screen time in general. The following information provides the latest research on how social media and devices impact our brains (adults and pre-teens/teens) generally, and why younger people specifically become so addicted to their smart phones. In addition, suggestions are made regarding ways to handle these struggles with emphasis on healthy brain/ nervous system development as a priority. Specific data reveals that the argument for smart phones keeping kids safer is actually not true! The world we live in appears safer for teens/pre-teens than what comes at them on their devices. www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/07/121187130983/smartphone-tween-safe-alternatives.

That you will heal yourself and end up in a relationship where everything will run smoothly is a myth. Entering into a relationship with someone also means that you will have to choose the fact that sooner or later this person will (most probably) press your most vulnerable buttons.

CHOOSE YOUR PARTNER WISELY

If you choose to enter into a relationship with someone, then you will have to be willing to accept that this relationship is going to trigger you and your beloved in your deepest wounds, unhealed parts and dynamics. Choosing for someone -despite their flaws- and overcoming challenging times together is what mature and healthy love is all about. It’s the ability to use these moments as opportunities in which both can grow and bring your relationship to new heights. This is how you can measure the quality of a relationship.

They Rejected Diet Culture 30 Years Ago. Then They Went Mainstream. 19/01/2023

This is an excellent, in -depth article about Intuitive Eating which is an approach that challenges the "diet culture" that trains us to feel shame about food and our bodies. This paradigm shift is research-driven and shares follow up research about its benefits. This internally focused way of relating to food and our bodies vs. "diet mentality" supports the goals having more peace with food and our bodies (ALL bodies!).

They Rejected Diet Culture 30 Years Ago. Then They Went Mainstream. Once considered radical, Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole’s method of intuitive eating has become the cornerstone of the modern anti-diet movement.

I am humbled by the resilience my clients are tapping into during these difficult times of COVID, tornadoes' devastation, economic uncertainty, and layers of deep exhaustion. It takes courage to be authentic, vulnerable and "real" while surrounded by images of festive celebrations where everyone seems happy, healthy, with plenty of food, decorated homes, lots of gifts, etc. Thank you to all my clients for the privilege of your trust and the gift of being invited into your struggles.

We’re back with part 2 of our “Dare to Lead” series on BRAVING Trust. In this episode, Barrett and I really dig into the core elements of BRAVING:

BOUNDARIES: Setting boundaries is making clear what’s okay and what’s not okay, and why.

RELIABILITY: You do what you say you’ll do. At work, this means staying aware of your competencies and limitations so you don’t overpromise and are able to deliver on commitments and balance competing priorities.

ACCOUNTABILITY: You own your mistakes, apologize, and make amends.

VAULT: You don’t share information or experiences that are not yours to share. I need to know that my confidences are kept, and that you’re not sharing with me any information about other people that should be confidential.

INTEGRITY: Choosing courage over comfort; choosing what’s right over what’s fun, fast, or easy; and practicing your values, not just professing them.

NONJUDGMENT: I can ask for what I need, and you can ask for what you need. We can talk about how we feel without judgment.

GENEROSITY: Extending the most generous interpretation to the intentions, words, and actions of others.

The BRAVING Inventory can be used as a conversation guide that walks us through trust-building from a place of curiosity, learning, and connection.
