Marlene, this kid looks so much like Jonathan when he was that age. It really took me me by surprise. Love, R

"See this moment? I've never experienced a moment like this. Yesterday was the first day my 5-year-old Autistic son met his new Autism Service Dog, Tornado. We are Americans that live overseas in Japan and have prepared for nearly two years to meet Tornado.”
This mother can't hug, wash, dress, snuggle and touch her son freely. But he is laying on the new service dog of his own free will, with a purposeful, unspoken attachment. This is the face of a mom who has seen her son experience countless failed social interactions on the playground in an attempt to have a friend. Any friend. But he has a friend now.

Singularity is coming, whether we like it or not. It’s a hypothetical future point in time to which technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in our machines becoming the masters.

== 🎶 AI …E …I …oh? You?==

Billionaire philanthropist and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates predicts a “massive technology boom” over the next decade as scientists continue to develop and fine-tune artificial intelligence (AI) in 2024.

Today, the Kidd assumes Michelangelo’s iconic Creator connecting to a robotic iteration of mankind. And who better to take on the role than a Kidd with the last name “millennium.”

== The Lore of the Confederate Rose 🌹 🥀 ==

The lore tells the tale of a Confederate soldier wounded in battle
Under the shade of a tree with horse & saddle
Critically claimed, he breathes his last breath
His blood morphing the blossoms from white to pink to red upon death.

Here’s Kidd Millennium’s take on a ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME . . .

== What Was The Jeopardy Question For One of Beaufort’s Native Son on 9/14/23? ==

A: In 2023 USS Chancellorsville was renamed after this black Civil War hero & Reconstruction-era congressman.

Q: Who was Robert Smalls?

Background: Robert Smalls (April 5, 1839 – February 23, 1915) was an American politician, publisher, businessman and maritime pilot. Born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina, he freed himself, his crew and their families during the American Civil War by commandeering a Confederate transport ship, CSS Planter, in Charleston harbor, on May 13, 1862, and sailing it from the Confederate-controlled waters of the harbor to the U.S.

After the Civil War, Smalls returned to Beaufort and became a politician, winning election as a Republican to the South Carolina Legislature and the United States House of Representatives during the Reconstruction era. He authored state legislation providing for South Carolina to have the first free and compulsory public school system in the United States. He founded the Republican Party of South Carolina. Smalls was the last Republican to represent South Carolina's 5th congressional district until the election of Mick Mulvaney in 2011.

Your Confederate Roses will be blooming this October. For me, it’s a way to remember how divisive our country once was —split down the middle by two factions that no longer wanted to listen to the other side. Hard to believe. But here we go again, facing the same type of fracture. Our toon this week focuses on death and rebirth. May your Confederate Roses🌹 this year make you ponder how we might avoid another civil war in this blessed land we call home —and even why that oxymoron “civil” and “war” should rear its ugly head once again.

== KIDD TOON: What’s In A Bloodstain ==

Kubb Reporter Kidd Millennium interviews a Confederate soldier ghost who perished during the Civil War. He’s carrying a bouquet of Confederate Roses 🌹which bares an interesting history in the South.

Blooming in October and November, this Southern favorite —botanically named Hibiscus mutabilis —has soft and fuzzy green leaves and camellia-like white/ pink/red flowers.

The name Confederate rose has a romantic origin. Grown in the gardens of the South, bouquets of the roses were given to returning Confederate soldiers. According to its legend, a soldier fell near a white rose bush. As he lay bleeding the flowers turned pink, then red, and then dropped off when the soldier died.

Quite a story for the Kidd who was born in the new millennium, some 200 years later.

== KIDD TOON: Dr Perry, A Beaufort Dead Ringer ==

Many residents of Beaufort feared the possibility of being buried alive during a Yellow Fever outbreak in the 1800s.

“If I pass away, bury me with a jug of wine, a loaf of bread and a pickax. Should I wake, I’ll drink the wine, eat the bread and dig myself out.” Dr. Perry did in fact die during this pandemic after his death.

The St Helena Anglican Church’s leaflet confirmed he was interred there, as his name corresponded with the tomb’s location on the map. However, Cub Reporter, KM couldn’t identify any bell 🔔 ringers where “X” marked the spot.

== Kidd Millennium: As The Crow Flies ==

Jack Pittman and I have taken Kidd Millennium to the future. Could flying cars be in our foreseeable in our furture? The Kidd thinks so, as he takes flight in his latest toon.

A Japan-based company that’s developing flying cars — yes, flying cars — has set up a temporary office in Beaufort as it explores entry into the U.S. market.

SkyDrive, backed by venture capital from some of Japan’s largest brands, is just one of several international companies checking out Beautiful Beaufort by the Sea, as it’s known, thanks to a new office hub called the Southern Carolina Landing Pad that companies can use for free while they develop their sea legs in unfamiliar waters and consider dropping anchor in U.S. markets.

But SkyDrive, a Tokyo-based aero-tech start-up, might offer the most intriguing product of the bunch.

== The Big Chill Morphs Into The Deep Freeze ==

Over the last several decades, Beaufort has become a movie mecca as a unique backdrop for movies. ‘The Big Chill’ —written by Beaufort’s native son, Pat Conroy —is one that’s marking its 40th year. Its narrative follows a group of once-close Michigan college friends, in their 30s, who reunite for a weekend of mid-life crisis woes, shared grief, soul searching, and Motown music after their college friend Alex commits su***de.

Here, we have kubb reporter Kidd Millennium taking a satirical swipe at how they’re feeling about aging, now that these characters are in their 70s.

By the way, if the exquisite ‘Big Chill’ antebellum home looks familiar, it may be because it was also used in the film, ‘The Great Santini’ — also written by Pat Conroy.

== Savannah Bananas’ Games Are As Good As Their Merch ==

The Bananas have played in kilts, had a hitter on stilts, danced in tutus, and tossed team-mandated underwear into the stands. Here catcher Kidd is interviewing the owner of the Savannah Bananas —Jesse Cole who is promoting his team’s briefs.

On game day, Cole, who’s always seen in his iconic solid yellow tux, yellow shoes and yellow top hat is always a show stopper for the fans.

== Betty White Crosses Over ==

Kidd takes on his spiritual garb to welcome the last of the “Golden Girls” to enter eternity. But knowing Ms. White’s sense of humor (as we do), we find her making a stopover in advance of meeting her Heavenly Father.

RIP Betty, and thank you for all those decades of entertainment. You will be sorely missed.

[Disclaimer: Jack Pittman loves and hopes his beloved dog 🐶 will be in heaven with him, and would NEVER put that before spending eternity with GOD first.]

== Kidd’s In A Pickle ==

Today the kidd takes to the courts as a cub reporter to get the inside story on Pickleball.

Pickleball, like tennis but a lot easier, is a booming sport growing in popularity across the nation, using several elements of other outdoor games.

As the fastest growing sport in the United States, Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington, and Bill Bell, a successful businessman, developed the game in 1965. With bored children at home, they sought to play badminton on an old tennis court but couldn’t find the proper equipment. So they improvised using table ping-pong paddles and a Wiffle ball. The rest is history.

== KIDD TOONS: Terra Nonconfirma ==

It’s a sad, sad, sad world. The last two decades, 2000-2020 were the hottest on record for planet Earth, according to ‘Skeptical Science.’

This week —according to myself & Jack Pittman (not so much) —the Kidd and 8 of his fellow planets in our solar system (including the dwarf planet ‘Pluto’ —even though science says it’s no longer considered a full-fledge planet) are trying to aid the Earth’s failing condition — namely finding a way for “terra firma” not to transition into “terra nonconfirma.”

(p.s. can you find Pluto?)
